TEAMWORK

Page 8: 2014 Teamwork

8

• Each group has a unique structure and

division of roles among its members

• Each group has power, sense and

communication structures

• A good leader is able to identify different

structures and to contribute to the

success of the group’s members

GROUP STRUCTURE

Page 9: 2014 Teamwork

9

• An individual referee can

achieve almost an optimal level

in his performance

• This does not guarantee the

optimal outcome of the game

TEAMWORK & REFEREEING

Page 10: 2014 Teamwork

10

• Most important is the correct outcome

of the game (not the referee’s

individual outcome)

• In addition to the individual’s top

performance, how can an individual

improve the team effort?

• Assisting your crew members to be at

their peak performance

HOW TO WORK AS ONE UNIT?

Page 13: 2014 Teamwork

"I was a good referee,

thanks to my partners.

They made me look good ."

IMPACT OF TEAMWORK

Page 14: 2014 Teamwork

seamless teamwork

amongst the crew.

IMPACT OF TEAMWORK

Page 15: 2014 Teamwork

15

• Help and assist if necessary

• Be sure that help is needed and

requested

• Don’t interfere but intervene

• Don’t guess – ask if you don’t

know

• Accept to be helped

HOW TO WORK AS A TEAM?

Page 16: 2014 Teamwork

16

• Respect your Crew Chief (as any other

crew member), but don’t expect that

he/she will do your part of the group work

on the court

• Every member of the crew is expected to

fulfill his/her part of the refereeing task with

equal responsibilities

• Don’t work for your partners, work with

them!

HOW TO WORK AS A CREW?

17

CREW CHIEF & MANAGEMENT

There is a huge difference between commanding a group

and leading a team to work seamlessly

Page 18: 2014 Teamwork

18

• How to anticipate (preparation)

• Teams, players, tactics and techniques

• Make a plan on how you will anticipate and

cover all the expected various situations

• Management, criteria and mechanics

• Consistency

• Respect the individual routines in the locker

room

BEFORE THE GAME

Page 19: 2014 Teamwork

19

Understand how to react (techniques)

• Set the tempo

• Change of the tempo or tactic

• Internal communication (eye contact etc…)

• First un-usual action

• How quickly do you recover as a crew in

case of failure (yourself or your partner)

• Share your feelings (time-outs, half-time)

DURING THE GAME

Page 20: 2014 Teamwork

20

Share and be honest

• Debrief in the dressing room

• Share your feelings (positive &

negative)

• Talk about refereeing not about the

referees

• Analyze the need for the improvement

with concrete examples

• Respect different approaches

AFTER THE GAME

Page 21: 2014 Teamwork

21

• Lack of standard performance or

failures during the game (you, partner(s),

crew)

• Language problem?

• Difference in the officiating

• Disagreements on the court

• Controversy or incorrect decisions

• Any others?

CHALLENGES TO FACE

Page 22: 2014 Teamwork

22

• Accept your mistakes in order to

improve

• Use your mistakes in order to improve

• Use your experience in order to

improve

• Don’t officiate ALONE in order to

improve

GLASS IS ALWAYS HALF FULL…

Page 23: 2014 Teamwork

23

• Each member of the team must

accept his role and responsibilities.

• The little details make the

difference for profitable team work.

• Don't change from black to white.

COLLECTIVE RESPONSIBILITY

Page 24: 2014 Teamwork

24

• Be honest with your crew

members and tell them when

you think there was a mistake

(time-outs) - deal with it within

your crew.

• Good leaders / co-workers are

able to get the best out of their

teammates.

COLLECTIVE RESPONSIBILITY

25

TEAMWORK

Don’t ask what

your teammates

can do for you.

Ask what you

can do for your

teammates.
