Temptation is a test of trust

Our deepest desire is usually for ourselves

The three types of temptation

Physical needsPowerPride

We need to trust God more than ourselves

Determine your deepest desire

Jesus was led by the Spirit
and he followed

Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordanand was led by the Spirit into the wilderness.(Luke 4:1)

Jesus faced temptations common to us all

Physical needs (Luke 4:3)Power (Luke 4:5-7)Pride (Luke 4:9-11)

Each time, Jesus displayed that his deepest desire was God

People do not live on bread alone.Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.Do not put the Lord your God to the test.(Luke 4:4, 8, 12)

Rely on the power and presence of the Holy Spirit and the promises of God

Jesus turned away temptation by relying on the power of the Spirit

Jesus [was] full of the Holy Spirit....(Luke 4:1)

Jesus turned away temptation by relying on the presence of the Spirit

[Jesus] was led by the Spirit in the wilderness.(Luke 4:1)

To turn away temptation,
determine your desire
and proceed by power and promise

Romans 8:38-39

I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
