Namm vs. Namm

From the Word came the Word. • With out the written word we could not know about Sukum things

• Namm is Sukum but we need Letters to begin Jap.

• Simran does not stop at Jap it begins there.

ਅਸੰਖ ਨਾਵ ਅਸੰਖ ਥਾਵ ॥ Countless names, countless places. ਅਗੰਮ ਅਗੰਮ ਅਸੰਖ ਲੋਅ ॥ Inaccessible, unapproachable, countless celestial realms. ਅਸੰਖ ਕਹਹਹ ਹਸਹਿ ਭਾਿੁ ਹਇੋ ॥ Even to call them countless is to carry the weight on your head. ਅਖਿੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਖਿੀ ਸਾਲਾਹ ॥ From the Word, comes the Naam; from the Word, comes Your Praise. ਅਖਿੀ ਹਗਆਨੁ ਗੀਤ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਹ ॥ From the Word, comes spiritual wisdom, singing the Songs of Your Glory. ਅਖਿੀ ਹਲਖਣੁ ਬਲੋਣੁ ਬਾਹਣ ॥ From the Word, come the written and spoken words and hymns. ਅਖਿਾ ਹਸਹਿ ਸੰਜਗੋੁ ਵਖਾਹਣ ॥ From the Word, comes destiny, written on one's forehead.

ਹਜਹਨ ਏਹਹ ਹਲਖੇ ਹਤਸੁ ਹਸਹਿ ਨਾਹਹ ॥

But the One who wrote these Words of Destiny-no words are written on His Forehead. ਹਜਵ ਫੁਿਮਾਏ ਹਤਵ ਹਤਵ ਪਾਹਹ ॥ As He ordains, so do we receive. ਜੇਤਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਤੇਤਾ ਨਾਉ ॥ The created universe is the manifestation of Your Name. ਹਵਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋ ਥਾਉ ॥ Without Your Name, there is no place at all. ਕੁਦਿਹਤ ਕਵਣ ਕਹਾ ਵੀਚਾਿੁ ॥ How can I describe Your Creative Power? ਵਾਹਿਆ ਨ ਜਾਵਾ ਏਕ ਵਾਿ ॥

I cannot even once be a sacrifice to You.

ਜੋ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸਾਈ ਭਲੀ ਕਾਿ ॥ Whatever pleases You is the only good done, ਤੂ ਸਦਾ ਸਲਾਮਹਤ ਹਨਿੰਕਾਿ ॥੧੯॥ You, Eternal and Formless One. ||19|

ਆਹਪ ਬੁਝਾਏ ਸੋਈ ਬੂਝੈ ॥ We understand the Lord only when He Himself inspires us to understand Him.

ਹਜਸੁ ਆਹਪ ਸੁਝਾਏ ਹਤਸੁ ਸਭੁ ਹਕਛੁ ਸੂਝੈ ॥ He alone knows everything, unto whom the Lord Himself gives

knowledge.

ਕਹਹ ਕਹਹ ਕਥਨਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਲਝੂੈ ॥ One may talk and preach and give sermons but still yearn after Maya.

ਹੁਕਮੀ ਸਗਲ ਕਿੇ ਆਕਾਿ ॥ The Lord, by the Hukam of His Command, has created the entire creation.

ਆਪੇ ਜਾਣੈ ਸਿਬ ਵੀਚਾਿ ॥ He Himself knows the inner nature of all.

ਅਖਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਅਹਖਓ ਆਹਪ ॥ O Nanak, He Himself uttered the Word.

ਲਹੈ ਭਿਾਹਤ ਹਵੋੈ ਹਜਸੁ ਦਾਹਤ ॥੨॥ Doubt departs from one who receives this gift. ||2||

Shabad

ਤਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਪੜਹਹ ਹਹਿ ਤਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਹਹ ॥ They read about the three qualities, but they do not know the essential reality

of the Lord.

ਮੂਲਹੁ ਭੁਲੇ ਗੁਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਪਛਾਣਹਹ ॥ They forget the Primal Lord, the Source of all, and they do not recognize the

Word of the Guru's Shabad.

ਮੋਹ ਹਬਆਪੇ ਹਕਛੁ ਸੂਝੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਿ ਸਬਦੀ ਹਹਿ ਪਾਵਹਣਆ ॥੬॥ They are engrossed in emotional attachment; they do not

understand anything at all. Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, the Lord is found. ||6||

ਵੇਦੁ ਪੁਕਾਿੈ ਹਤਰਹਬਹਧ ਮਾਇਆ ॥ The Vedas proclaim that Maya is of three qualities.

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਨ ਬੂਝਹਹ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇਆ ॥ The self-willed manmukhs, in love with duality, do not understand.

ਤਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਪੜਹਹ ਹਹਿ ਏਕੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਹਹ ਹਬਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਹਣਆ ॥੭॥ They read of the three qualities, but they do not know

the One Lord. Without understanding, they obtain only pain and suffering. ||7||

ਜਾ ਹਤਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਾ ਆਹਪ ਹਮਲਾਏ ॥ When it pleases the Lord, He unites us with Himself.

ਗੁਿ ਸਬਦੀ ਸਹਸਾ ਦੂਖੁ ਚੁਕਾਏ ॥ Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, skepticism and suffering are dispelled.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਵੈ ਕੀ ਸਚੀ ਵਹਿਆਈ ਨਾਮੋ ਮੰਹਨ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਹਣਆ ॥੮॥੩੦॥੩੧॥ O Nanak, True is the Greatness of the Name.

Believing in the Name, peace is obtained. ||8||30||31||

ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਪੜੈ ਨਹੀ ਬੂਝੈ ॥ One who reads, while attached to duality, does

not understand.

ਹਤਰਹਬਹਧ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾਿਹਣ ਲੂਝੈ ॥ He yearns for the three-phased Maya.

ਹਤਰਹਬਹਧ ਬੰਧਨ ਤੂਟਹਹ ਗੁਿ ਸਬਦੀ ਗੁਿ ਸਬਦੀ ਮੁਕਹਤ ਕਿਾਵਹਣਆ ॥੩॥ The

bonds of the three-phased Maya are broken by the Word of the Guru's Shabad. Through the Guru's Shabad, liberation is achieved. ||3||

You don’t need to know much

• One word goes a long way. Waheguru.

ਕਬੀਿ ਪਿਭਾਤੇ ਤਾਿੇ ਹਖਸਹਹ ਹਤਉ ਇਹੁ ਹਖਸੈ ਸਿੀਿੁ ॥ Kabeer, just as the stars disappear at

dawn, so shall this body disappear.

ਏ ਦੁਇ ਅਖਿ ਨਾ ਹਖਸਹਹ ਸੋ ਗਹਹ ਿਹਹਓ ਕਬੀਿੁ ॥੧੭੧॥ Only the letters of God's Name do

not disappear; Kabeer holds these tight. ||171||

ਕਬੀਿ ਕੋਠੀ ਕਾਠ ਕੀ ਦਹ ਹਦਹਸ ਲਾਗੀ ਆਹਗ ॥ Kabeer, the wooden house is burning on all

sides.

ਪੰਹਿਤ ਪੰਹਿਤ ਜਹਲ ਮੂਏ ਮੂਿਖ ਉਬਿੇ ਭਾਹਗ ॥੧੭੨॥ The Pandits, the religious scholars, have

been burnt to death, while the illiterate ones run to safety. ||172||

ਕਬੀਿ ਸੰਸਾ ਦੂਹਿ ਕਿ ੁਕਾਗਦ ਦੇਹ ਹਬਹਾਇ ॥ Kabeer, give up your skepticism; let your

papers float away.

ਬਾਵਨ ਅਖਿ ਸੋਹਧ ਕ ੈਹਹਿ ਚਿਨੀ ਹਚਤ ੁਲਾਇ ॥੧੭੩॥ Find the essence of the letters of the

alphabet, and focus your consciousness on the Lord. ||173||

The importance of Gurbani

We learn about Namm from Gurbani which is written.

ਅਖਿ ਮਹਹ ਹਤਰਭਵਨ ਪਰਹਭ ਧਾਿੇ ॥ In the Word, God established the three worlds.

ਅਖਿ ਕਹਿ ਕਹਿ ਬੇਦ ਬੀਚਾਿੇ ॥ Created from the Word, the Vedas are contemplated.

ਅਖਿ ਸਾਸਤਰ ਹਸੰਹਮਰਹਤ ਪੁਿਾਨਾ ॥ From the Word, came the Shaastras, Simritees and

Puraanas.

ਅਖਿ ਨਾਦ ਕਥਨ ਵਖ੍੍ਾਨਾ ॥ From the Word, came the sound current of the Naad,

speeches and explanations.

ਅਖਿ ਮੁਕਹਤ ਜੁਗਹਤ ਭੈ ਭਿਮਾ ॥ From the Word, comes the way of liberation from fear

and doubt.

ਅਖਿ ਕਿਮ ਹਕਿਹਤ ਸੁਚ ਧਿਮਾ ॥ From the Word, come religious rituals, karma,

sacredness and Dharma.

ਹਦਰਸਹਟਮਾਨ ਅਖਿ ਹੈ ਜੇਤਾ ॥ In the visible universe, the Word is seen.

ਨਾਨਕ ਪਾਿਬਰਹਮ ਹਨਿਲੇਪਾ ॥੫੪॥ ||54|| O Nanak, the Supreme Lord God remains

unattached and untouched. ||54||

ਹਜਉ ਬੋਲਾਏ ਹਤਉ ਬੋਲੀਐ ਜਾ ਆਹਪ ਬੁਲਾਏ ਸੋਇ ॥ I speak just as He makes me

speak, when He Himself makes me speak.

ਗੁਿਮੁਹਖ ਬਾਣੀ ਬਰਹਮੁ ਹੈ ਸਬਹਦ ਹਮਲਾਵਾ ਹੋਇ ॥ The Word of the Gurmukh is

God Himself. Through the Shabad, we merge in Him.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਹਲ ਤੂ ਹਜਤੁ ਸੇਹਵਐ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੪॥੩੦॥੬੩॥ O Nanak,

remember the Naam; serving Him, peace is obtained. ||4||30||63||
