Know What Love Is…
• As we study the scriptures in
1 Corinthians 13 we can learn
what love is.
• God’s Word is Truth. Jn. 17:17
– It gives us all things that pertain to
life and godliness. 2 Pet. 1:3
– We learn how to live and be godly
as we understand how to love.
Love is Patient! 1 Corinthians 13:4; 1 Thes. 5:14
• Patient: to be of a long spirit, not
to lose heart. Greek 3114
• Some were hateful and suing one
another instead of loving. 1 Cor. 6:4-8
• This part of love suffers long as it
accommodates others and gives them
room to grow and time to accomplish
the work God is doing with them.
• It suffers long under all hardships.
Love is Kind!
1 Corinthians 13:4 • Kind: to show one’s self mild, to be
kind, use kindness. Gk. 5541
– It’s centered from the heart then
funnels Christ’s ways outward.
– Is a practice of selfless benevolence
and compassion. Eph. 4:31-5:2
– It relates with and helps others and is
both thoughtful and considerate.
1 Corinthians 9:22; Romans 12:9-21
Love Rejoices in the Truth! 1 Corinthians 13:6
• We see that we must desire, seek, and
reflect Christ’s truth!
– We must live in complete integrity and
honesty. 2 Cor. 8:21; Eph. 4:25
– Some misuse “love” as weapon to tear
down and not build up, to focus on and
benefit self and not others.2 Cor.10:12,18
• True love rejoices in the Lord! Phil. 4:4-5
Love Bears ALL Things! 1 Corinthians 13:7
• Always protects: To cover, cover with
silence, …of the errors and faults of others.
– It looks out for the best interests and
protection of others. 2 Cor. 1:3-7
– Like God’s love which never leaves or
forsakes us. Heb. 13:5-6
– It even perseveres when disappointed…
2 Cor. 7:3-7; 2 Cor. 12:15
– Love covers sin…1 Pet. 4:8; Prov. 10:12
Love Always Trusts! 1 Corinthians 13:7
• Believes all things… is a complete trust
like God shows to us and wants us to have
toward others.
– Our trust and reliance upon God is to be
complete. Prov. 3:5-7; 2 Cor. 5:7; Isa.12
– Believes the best until shown otherwise
Phil. 4:8; Prov. 14:15; Jn. 7:1; Mt.10:16
– The Corinth church didn’t have this
attribute of love at first… 1 Cor. 3:1-4, 5:;
2 Cor. 2:3-11
Love Always Hopes!
1 Corinthians 13:7; Jeremiah 29:11
• Hope: to wait for salvation with joy and
confidence, ...to trust in. Gk. 1679
– It always has the assurance of something
better in the future. Romans 8:28
– Have this hope for others? 1 Timothy 2:4;
2 Peter 3:9
– We won’t be suspicious or spiteful, but
positive. 1 Tim. 6:3-4; 1 Cor. 16:13-14
Love Always Perseveres! 1 Corinthians 13:7
• Real love will never fade or become
obsolete!
– It keeps on going strong. 1 Cor. 13:8a
– This aspect of love is a willing and natural
way for the godly. 1 Jn.4:7-8,11-12,19-21
– Comes from humility and spiritual focus.
James 4:10; Romans 8:6; Eph. 3:14-21
Love Is Powerful!
• God’s love led to Salvation now
available for all. John 3:16-17
• Come obey Him and be saved
from sin today… Romans 6:23
• Belief in the Gospel - Romans 1:16
• Repentance from sin - Acts 2:38
• Confession of Christ - Rom. 10:9-10
• Baptism - Mark 16:16
