Three Days Trip to Makassar

Two days ago, I went to Makassar to visit my cousin, Nisma. She took me to several tourist sites in Makassar while I was there.

On the first day I arrived, Nisma took me to Losari Beach. This beach was very famous. In fact, Nisma said that there was a song that talked about the beauty of this beach. Alog the beach, there were a lot of restaurants. We had dinner at one of the restaurants and got an opportunity to try soup konro, one of the well-known cuisine of Makassar. It was delicious.

Page 3: My english workbook sma 1 a

On the following day, we went to Fort Rotterdam. The place used to be known as Benteng Ujung Pandang, but its name was changed during Dutch colonialism. The guide at this tourist site gave us some interesting information about the site. He told us that Pangeran Diponegoro was exiled and imprisoned in this fort, inside a museum called La Galigo. The building looked bleak, but the architecture was awesome.

After a tiring journey, we went to a restaurant and ate es pisang ijo. It was traditional ice cream made from a big green banana mixed with some ice and syrup. The portion of the ice cream was so big that I could only eat half of it.

On the last day, Nisma brought me to some souvenir shops around Somba Opu. I bought lots of souvenirs for my family and friends. I bought some bags, clothes, and snacks.

In the evening, Nisma accompanied me to the Hasanuddin airport. I was very happy and promised her that I would return to this city again someday. Makassar rocks

Page 36Part 2Title: Queen Aji Bidara PutihOrientation: Once upon a time in East Kalimantan, there was a kingdom in Muara

Kaman. It was ruled by Queen Aji Bidara Putih. She was a typical queen of myths: beautiful, wise, and kind. Many princes and kings proposed her, but she always refused them because she was more concerned about ruling her country and guarding her people.

What happened: One day, a big ship from China came. The Chinese prince brought his soldiers and also a lot of jewelry. The prince wanted to give the jewelry as a wedding proposal. He then asked a messenger to tell the queen about the wedding proposal. The queen thought it was time for her to get married. She felt she was old enough. However, she didn’t want to choose a wrong husband. She asked one soldier to secretly go to the ship because she wanted to know how the Chinese prince looked like. When the night fell, the soldier sneaked into the ship and found the prince’s room, but he couldn’t find any peep holes. So he put his ear to the wall, trying to catch sounds from inside. He heard that the prince was having his dinner and he could hear how the prince ate. The prince was eating using chopsticks. He made strange sounds when he was eating. The soldier was so scared. He never heard that sound before. He thought the prince was not a real human. When the soldier arrived back at the palace, he immediately reported it to the queen. He told the queen about the strange sound and convinced the queen that the prince was not a human. The queen then decided to refuse the wedding proposal. It

made the Chinese prince very angry. He asked his soldiers to attack Muara Kaman kingdom. The battle was won by the large amount of troops of China and they got close to the palace. She then prayed to God.

Resolution: While he prayed, suddenly she heard a voice that asked her to chew betel. When she threw it to the Chinese troops, it turned into giant centipedes. The Chinese troops started to retreat but three centipedes chased them. The Chinese soldiers died and from the ground appeared a lake. People of Muara Kaman then named it as Danau Lipan or Lake Centipede.

Talaga Warna

Long time ago, there was a kingdom in West Java. It was a pity however, that the king and his queen didn’t have any children.

One day the king went to the jungle to pray. Every day he begged for a child to God. A few months later, his dream came true and his wife got pregnant.

Nine months later, a princess was born. The king and the queen loved their daughter so much that the princess became a very spoiled girl.

Day by day the princess grew more beautiful. In a few days the princess would be 17 years old. So people of the kingdom brought many presents for her. The king collected the gold and jewels from the people and gave them to a goldsmith.

“Make a beautiful necklace for my daughter”, said the king to the goldsmith.“My pleasure Your Majesty”, the goldsmith replied.

At the princess’ birthday party, the king and the queen waved to their beloved people. Cheers were louder when the princess appeared with her fabulous pretty face. Then, the king gave the necklace to the princess.

The princess looked at the necklace in a glance, “I don’t want to accept it. It’s ugly!”’ shouted the princess. Then, she threw the necklace. The necklace fell and the gold and the jewels were spread out on the floor.

The queen cried and every woman began crying too. Then everybody cried. Suddenly, a spring emerged from the underground. It made a pool of water. Soon the kingdom became a big lake.

Nowadays people call the lake “Talaga Warna”. It is located in Puncak West Java.

It was her first day at Cedars International School. Sheila was in the 2nd grade. She missed her old school and was quite sure that she was going to hate this new place.

1

At lunch break, Junie and Pam, two girls from her class introduced themselves to her. They took her to a tree that stood at the corner of the playground. “Would you like to come to the Hole of Mysteries with us?” Pam asked her.“Hole of Mysteries! Where’s that?” Sheila asked astonished.Near the tree was a hole, covered with hay and sticks. “This is the Hole of Mysteries,” said Junie.“Come on, let’s jump into the hole,” said Pam.Holding each other’s hands, Pam, Sheila, and Junie jumped inside. The hole became darker as they went deeper and deeper.

2

Page 12: My english workbook sma 1 a

Then all of a sudden, it became bright. Lighted candles were everywhere. Sheila was frightened. Seeing her, Pam laughed. Junie pointed out to a rabbit lighting a candle.“That is Binkie the rabbit,” said Pam. “She plans all our adventures.”“Hi, Binkie!” said Junie. “This is Sheila, our new friend. Do you have a mysterious adventure for us today in the mysterious school?”Binkie smiled and said, “Hi Sheila, welcome to the Hole of Mysteries. Sorry girls, I only have a tiny adventure for you. It’s not easy, mind you. You have to be very alert as it’s to do with sounds. Be aware of he who can talk. Now follow me. You have to find your way out.” Binkie went ahead.

The girls followed her. They came to a small room. Binkie had vanished. Once they got inside, the doors locked automatically. There were three animals in the room: a cat, a dog, and a fish (inside a bowl). They could hear loud grunts from outside.“I think there’s a monster nearby,” said Sheila, frightened.“We have to take the help of these animals to get out!” whispered Junie.“Or else we have to stay here forever,” said Pam.“How do we find our way out?” asked Sheila, feeling quite nervous.“Let’s think hard!” said Junie.

“I think I know!” said Pam. “Remember Binkie told us to be aware of ‘he who can talk’. I think one of these animals can talk.”Pam went up to the fish and said,” Can you help us?” the fish didn’t seem to have heard her and continued to wave its tail in the water. Then Sheila went up to the dog and said, “What’s your name?”“Spike,” replied the dog.” If you are looking for the exit, I can help you.”“Can you really talk?” the girls asked the dog.“Yes I can,” said the dog. “Now press hard against the door and chant ‘Ashanti’ three times. When the door opens, run fast until you reach the top. Don’t look back ever!”

The three thanked the dog and as soon as they chanted ‘Ashanti’ three times, the door opened. But, the grunting sounds grew louder, frightening the girls. They ran up the dark path, stopping only when they reached up, at the beginning of the tunnel.“Hey, we made it!” shouted Pam in excitement as they found back themselves in the mysterious school playground.“But what about the animals?” asked Sheila.“They are in there, perhaps helping Binkie plan our next adventure!”“Wow!” said Sheila. “ I think I’m going to have great time in Cedars!”The bell rang just then and the trio returned to their class in the mysterious school.
