MY BRIEF

“You have been commissioned by the

Northern Echo to produce a new

magazine or newspaper product. Your

product could be in any style or genre

but must be self financed through

sales or advertising. You must also

produce your magazine for a specified

audience segment within the 16 to 25

age group.”

MEETING MY CLIENT’S AIMS; MY DECISIONS AND WHY.

• ‘Erupt’ – fast paced world of music and film

• Music/film hybrid – not many like it

• ABC1’s – alike Northern Echo

• Gender split of 55/45 (f/m) -content

• Aiming at the tribe ‘young alts’ – alternative

• Self financed – advertising

• High quality journalists and photographers

Page 4: My Media Pitch

HOW I’M GOING TO APPEAL TO MY TARGET AUDIENCE

• Use formal/articulate/technological

language

• Longer sentence/paragraph lengths

• Subtle humour

• Free due to supplement

• Eye catching layouts

• Balanced text to image ratio, but more

text if necessary

• Models within age group of TA

• Techniques that my TA can identify with

• Interesting colour scheme

Page 5: My Media Pitch

SECONDARY AUDIENCE

• My secondary audience; the older generation

• To appeal; ensure there’s no nudity, taboo language or

inappropriate content.

• Ensure magazine includes certain information points that

intrigue this secondary audience

Page 6: My Media Pitch

CLIENT CONSTRAINTS

• I have made 5 golden rules to prevent myself from

breaking the codes monitored by the PCC

concerning accuracy, privacy, intrusion into

grief, discrimination or harassment. These rules

are…

• 1. from reliable source/check info with other info

• 2. not publish names/check info is correct/get

consent

• 3. sensitive/doesn’t include vast detail

• 4. not discriminate against people/stereotypes

• 5. not harass for info/stop when had enough

Page 7: My Media Pitch

GENRE RESEARCH

• I noticed that these magazines made

use of the colour red quite frequently to

attract the target audience, they also

included a lot of emotive or powerful

imagery, with interesting fonts. Metal

Hammer, specifically, had an article

about Slipknot’s comeback; this article

contained a lot of technical language

concerned with the subject of music.

• They’re all also very eye catching, which

is an approach I will extrapolate onto my

own magazine.

Page 8: My Media Pitch

AUDIENCE RESEARCH

• Young alts tribe

• Aiming towards students –supplement, ABC1’s link with this as they’re more likely to have the Northern Echo in their houses, so this coming with it will generate appeal towards younger audiences

• Mixed gender as both genders like music and film equally.

Page 9: My Media Pitch

AUDIENCE VIABILITY

• I created two versions of the same double page

spread, using the same article for each but with a

different layout and different imagery.

• I got some good feedback on both of the double page

spreads…
