For this piece of work I
intend to describe what my
song, for my music video, will
represent and what the video
will be about. In the following
slides, I will break it down
into different categories and
explain each section, in
detail, with use of examples
and also add what influenced
me.
Baiyu – Sweet Misery
What is my music video about? My music video is about a girl who is aware that her boyfriend
is cheating on her. At the beginning she tries to show that she
doesn’t care about it and how she can move on. She is
positioned in most of the places that her boyfriend and his
affair are. For example, she is there when they go out together,
and that is how she sings the song. (She is invisible to them but
to her audience she is visible)
Later on, anger slowly begins to build up as she starts feeling
pain and jealously. During the last line of the song, she is seen
at the door where her boyfriend and his affair are staying and
is about to ring the door bell, and we catch a glimpse of a
knife in her hand and slowly it fades to black.
Influenced by.....
Rihanna- Take A Bow
How will it be integrated? Through the ancillary products I intend to create a visible link
between the DVD cover and Magazine. Firstly, I will arrange
the colour scheme so that both products will have a similar
arrangement. In addition to this, with my Music Video it will
link with both the DVD and Magazine, with the
actors/actresses being both shown on the covers. For example,
the main girl, boyfriend and his affair will be on the cover,
with the full focus on the main character and other characters
shown in the background. By doing this, my audience will
constantly be aware of the brand and know that all products
are related to each other.
I have chosen this song to be targeted at
young people from 16-28. This is age is
perfect for my music video due to meaning
relating to relationships and also the issues
with them. My video relates to mainly
young love, i.e. before marriage, and my
age category are in this area and it relates
to them because most of them would have
gone through some sort of problem during
a relationship. On the other hand it could
also apply to those who have got into a
young marriage and witness these sorts of
problems as I have discussed in my
description of my video.
My music video will be targeted at a
female audience as I feel that the
lyrics relate to a more feminine way of
thinking. For example the title of the
song is ‘Sweet Misery’ which is an
oxymoron and some women tend to
not be to blunt, and add some sort of
calm and passionate atmosphere to
the way they are feeling. This aspect I
thought of was influenced by Beyonce
and Shakira’s song ‘Beautiful Liar’
because they sing about a man who
lies, but he his seen as ‘Beautiful’
My music video will be
targeted at ALL ethnic
backgrounds due to the
fact that the story of the
lyrics relate to any person,
no matter what colour their
skin is or what religion
they believe in.
Due to the audience being
women, they will be mainly
interested in going out with
their friends and shopping. This
immediately conforms with the
stereotype of women, being that
they are addicted to shopping
and going places with friends.
This video will be targeted to
people of a working class. My
reason for this is because the
video is mainly for a young
audience and most of them will
be in the working class sector,
due to them being in secondary
school/college, work, university
or just being beginning a new
career.
My targeted audience would be involved in watching
programmes, which are related to music, like MTV Base. This
shows all genres of music, and in addition to this they will be
able to show this type of genre which is R’N’B and Hip Hop.
They may also listen to Radio Stations such as Kiss 100 and
Choice FM. These radio stations in the U.K normally are fond of
playing genres such as R’N’B, Hip Hop and Pop music.
The style I want to use in my video is similar to
what artists on major labels use, such as
Rihanna and Beyonce. These R’n’B Artists
inspire me on my own product because of the
similar concepts they have used in their own
music video. For example; Beyonce ‘Best Thing
I Never Had’ is similar due to the fact that the
main character (Beyonce) is telling her story
about how her relationship did not work,
however my ending will be different due to my
video not ending as a typical ‘Happily Ever
After’.
It will be a narrative product because I want my
video to be a story, and follow the words of the
lyrics in the images shown. In addition to this it
will involve a type of performance as there are
actors present in the video.
The concept of my music video is that the girl
finds out that her boyfriend is finding
pleasure outside their relationship. In my
video it shows that the male character is the
one who is having an affair, this could both
prove and challenge the stereotype of men.
My video is able to challenge a typical
ending, with the girl, who is being cheated
on, not ending as the most dominant
character in the video (as in confronting her
boyfriend and his affair), however it leaves
the audience on some sort of cliff-hanger
because it ends at a point of the audience
deciding whether she will come out as the
strongest or the weakest.
The ancillary product, being the DVD and magazine
advert, will contain similar colour schemes and
typography. This enables to continue a particular image
for the brand the artist is creating.
For example;
With Rihanna’s album and single covers, she is able to
maintain the same type of colour theme and font.
Both album covers
for ‘LOUD’, and
her single, both
consist of this type
of misty effect and
also the colour red
has now been
linked with her
album cover due to
her outstanding
hair colour.
This ancillary product will allow the artist to gain more popularity, due
to the cover being in one of the most popular magazines which females
read. For example, O.K, Vogue, Hello. In this cover, it will be a picture
of just the artist, against a black background and wearing fitted dress,
fully made-up. This will automatically show dominance in being a
female artist and will show how she can be a role model, to young girls
with what ever she is wearing in the photoshoot.
Specific items which will be included in the magazine cover, would be
an interview with the magazine. This is seen to be Entertainment and
Personal Identity, under the Uses and Gratifications theory, because it
allows the chosen audience to be aware of the personal life of the
artist, and find out things which she may like and dislike. In addition
to this, it will also have adverts for competitions to win £1000 shopping
spree, or travelling abroad. Again, this targets the audience because
shopping would be more appealing to a female audience. With
reference to the song, being about relationship issues, there could be a
column on advice on relationships, like an Agony Aunt, which can
persuade women to call or email anonymously if they have problems in
relationships.
Name: Sara Baiyu Chen
Born: December 21, 1983
Place of birth: Xiamen, China
Genre: R’n’B and Pop Music.
Description:
Just like many upcoming artists, the Asian/American
beauty, Baiyu has finding her own way of becoming very
successful in the music industry. She was even lucky
enough to have featured in a song with a very popular
producer, writer and singer Ryan Leslie, who has worked
with the likes of Cassie on her smash hit ‘Me and U’
Before I chose the song ‘Sweet Misery’ I looked at specific
female artists, on major labels, who I admire and would like to
follow a similar style, when creating my music video.
