Introduction:

We’ve all seen them: those people at an event with the newest phone, tablet, or other high-tech gadget. We constantly hear people say, “hey, that’s cool!” or “wow, how does that work?” so how can event organizers impress this savvy crew of event goers? With today’s technology, there are a lot of different options that can get you brownie points at your next event. Here are a few tech tips that will impress any guest:

1. Geo-fence your event:

Imagine if when your guests approach the door right before an event, their ticket would show up automatically on their phone? This is 100% possible. If your ticketing system offers mobile tickets compatible with Passbook for iPhone, or Google Now Cards for Android users, your savvy guests will be surprised and delighted by geo-fenced notifications!

2. Support mobile check-in:

Get those savvy guests through the door quicker, and encourage them to save paper by using their phone as a ticket. In other words, offer the ability to download paperless tickets on their mobile device, and check them in by scanning their QR code. No more paper, pens, or ticket stubs!

3. Make the most of event #hashtags:

Create a custom event hashtag that your guests can use to tweet, instagram, or post on Facebook. If you have access to a TV or a monitor, you can display some of your guests’ photos and tweets in real time! This is a good social media tactic for you and definitely fun for your tech savvy guests.

On that social media note, you can also utilize your hashtag as a marketing tool prior to your event. Create incentives for guests to tweet about your upcoming event by offering discounts on ticket prices if they do! This way, guests can start using the customized hashtag before the event even arrives and your event will receive more publicity (bonus!)

4. Cue the app-lause:

Instead of creating a paper guide to your event (containing the schedule, map of the venue, etc.), try making it available online for your guests to download on their smartphones. However, if you want to impress guests even more, consider creating an app for your event that guests can download before the event or as they arrive. This way, you’ll be able to update them with information as the event goes on and your guests will have up to date information at their fingertips.

There are companies who will even create a customized app for your event! Check out www.TheAppLabb.com for more information.

5. Engage “virtual” attendees from around the globe:

Venues are only so big, but the market for your event goes beyond these walls. One way to engage people from around the world is to live stream some of the lectures, panels, and other important moments. If these people will like what they see, they may decide to attend your next event in person! Either way, your event will get more exposure and people will appreciate the ability to watch these videos for free. You can even require them to input an email address, so that you can notify them about your next event (read: more attendees!) If your event has presentations, try to post all of the event’s slides on SlideShare for your guests and others to reference after the event. Making the slides easily accessible is a simple way to continue engagement after the event is over. Posting any pictures from the event will do this as well!
