INTRODUCTION

• A board-certified cardiologist, Dr. Rajan Bhatt works at Spectrum Dermatology & Vein Center. In this capacity, Dr. Rajan Bhatt treats a variety of vein and vascular disorders with such procedures as sclerotherapy.

A non-surgical procedure, sclerotherapy reduces the appearance of small varicose and spider veins. It is performed by injecting a solution into the targeted veins and the procedure can take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour to complete. In most cases, at least two sclerotherapy treatments are needed to achieve the best results.

Prior to surgery, patients should not shave their legs or put any oil or lotion on their legs for at least 24 hours. Sun exposure should also be minimized for at least one month before treatment. However, on the day of the surgery, patients are encouraged to wear a skirt, shorts, or loose pants. These types of garments make it easier to place the injection and put on compression bandages.

SCLEROTHERAPY

• When physicians perform sclerotherapy, patients lie on their back. The legs are slightly elevated and the area around the vein is cleansed. Once the injection is administered, patients are free to get up and walk around freely. Doing so reduces their risk of blood clots. Compression bandages or stockings are used to cover the treated area and may be left in place for approximately two weeks.

Although patients can return to their usual activities after undergoing sclerotherapy, they are usually advised to avoid strenuous exercise and sun exposure for two weeks following the procedure. During this time, patients may experience bruising, swelling, or tenderness around the injection site. More serious side effects, such as skin inflammation or changes in skin pigmentation, should be reported to a physician.
