Macular Degeneration and Stem Cells TherapyMacular degeneration is the defect of the eye which leads to loss of vision.

This disease occurs when macula of the eye deteriorates.

Macula is a part of eye present inside the inner back layer of the retina and is responsible for our detailed vision. It is made of many photoreceptor cells of which rods and cones are the two preliminary cells. Macula captures whatever we see and then transmit to the brain via optic nerve and enables us to view the things as they are.

In the case of macular degeneration, the photoreceptor cells get damage causing the loss of vision though the person will not suffer from totally blinding condition .

As the disease develops with aging, it is often referred to as age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

There are two main types of age-related macular degeneration:

Dry form or atrophic or non-neovascular macular degeneration - It is the most common form and found in almost 85-90 % of macular degeneration cases. The dry form is characterized by the deposition of a yellow pigment known as drusen in and around the macula which when reach to an extreme level may lead to dimming or distortion of vision or by thinning of the light-sensitive layer of cells which leads to atrophy or tissue death. In atrophy level of macular degeneration, patients have a blind spot in the center of their vision.

Macular Degeneration and Stem Cells TherapyWet form or exudative or neovascular macular degeneration - It is found in around 10-15% cases of macular degeneration. The "wet" form of macular degeneration is caused to abnormal growth of blood vessels from the choroid which is present inside the macula. When the blood or fluids lead out into the retina, it causes vision distortion along with the blind spots and loss of central vision.

• Early AMD –Vision loss is not detected at this stage due to which a regular eye check up is very necessary. Early diagnosis can be done by the presence of medium-sized drusen (yellow deposits beneath the retina).

• Intermediate AMD – Vision loss may be detected but actual detection of the macular degeneration occur after a comprehensive eye exam with specific tests will look for larger drusen or pigment changes in the retina.

• Late AMD – Vision loss can easily be detected at this stage.

Risk Factors

Macular Degeneration is mainly caused due to aging and it is most likely to occur in people of age 55 and older.

Other factors which lead to macular degeneration are:

Genetical causes – Occur commonly in those which are having a family history of Macular degeneration.

Smoking, high blood pressure, obesity, fast food, irregular eating habits and lack of exercise all increase the risk of AMD.

At present, no cure is available for macular degeneration however there are certain things which can help in reducing the risk and slow down the progression over time.

There is currently no known cure for Macular Degeneration, but there are things which include lifestyle changes like dieting, exercise, avoiding smoking, and protecting your eyes from ultraviolet light etc. which may reduce the risk and possibly slow the progression once you’ve been diagnosed.

In rare cases, eye surgery is surgery is suggested by doctors.
