Ingrown hairs are hairs that have curled around and grown back into your skin instead of growing up and out. This irritates the skin, producing a raised, red bump.

When a hair is removed below the skin’s surface, it can curl up inside the follicle as it re-grows. This makes it impossible for the hair to reach the surface. Hair follicles can also become clogged, which forces the hair inside to grow sideways under the skin rather than upward and outward.
