Ingrown hairs occur most often after hair has been shaved, cut, waxed or tweezed. As the hair grows back, it curls up inside the follicle, making it impossible for the hair to reach the skin’s surface. Hair follicles can also clog, forcing the hair to grow sideways under the skin rather than upward and outward.

Before removing unwanted hair, wet your skin with warm water and apply a lubricating gel. Shave in the same direction as the hair grows to prevent it from becoming trapped within the follicle. If you’re shaving with an electric razor, use the far setting. There are also many products to treat and prevent ingrown hairs.
