Generic Rifaximin Tablets (Rifagut Tablets) is an antibacterial used to treat travellers diarrhea (TD) caused by non-invasive strains of Escherichia coli in patients 12 years of age and older. It is also used for reduction in risk of overt hepatic encephalopathy (HE) recurrence in patients 18 years of age and more.

Uses of Generic Rifaximin Tablets

Generic Rifaximin (Rifagut Tablets) is used in the treatment of traveler's diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome, and hepatic encephalopathy. Generic Rifaximin is highly effective at preventing and treating traveler's diarrhea, with few side effects and low risk of developing antibiotic resistance.It may also be efficacious in relieving chronic functional symptoms of bloating and flatulence that are common in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), especially IBS-D.

Generic Rifaximin (Rifagut tablets ) have to be stored at controlled room temperature i.e. from 20C to 25C (68F to 77F) and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Keep Generic Rifaximin in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Keep this as well as all other medicines away from children and pets.

Travelers Diarrhea Not Caused by E. coli: Generic Rifaximin was not effective in diarrhea complicated by fever and/or blood in the stool or diarrhea due to pathogens other than E. coli. If diarrhea symptoms get worse or persist for more than 24-48 hours, discontinue Generic Rifaximin (Rifagut Tablets) and consider alternative antibiotics. Clostridium difficile-Associated Diarrhea: Evaluate if diarrhea occurs after therapy or does not improve or worsens during therapy.

Hepatic Impairment: Use with caution in patients with severe (Child-Pugh C) hepatic impairment.

Travelers Diarrhea: The recommended dose of Generic Rifaximin is one 200 mg tablet taken orally three times a day for 3 days. Generic Rifaximin can be administered orally, with or without food.

Hepatic Encephalopathy: The recommended dose of Generic Rifaximin is one 550 mg tablet taken orally two times a day, with or without food.

Contraindications

Rifagut is contraindicated in patients with a hypersensitivity to Rifaximin, Rifamycin antimicrobial agents, or any other component of this medication. Hypersensitivity reactions have included exfoliative dermatitis, angioneurotic edema, and anaphylaxis.

Generic Rifaximin (Rifagut) side effects in the treatment of Travelers Diarrhea with an incidence rate of 5% or more Flatulence, headache, abdominal pain, rectal tenesmus, defecation urgency and nausea.

Most common side effects of Generic Rifaximin tablets in the treatment of Hepatic Encephalopathy with an incidence rate of 10% or more are Peripheral edema, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, ascites, flatulence, and headache.

No specific information is available on the treatment of overdosage with Generic Rifaximin (Rifagut Tablets). In clinical studies at doses higher than the recommended dose (more than 600 mg/day for travelers diarrhea or more than 1100 mg/day for hepatic encephalopathy), adverse reactions were similar in subjects who received doses higher than the recommended dose and placebo. In the case of overdosage, discontinue Generic Rifaximin (Rifagut Tablets) , treat symptomatically, and institute supportive measures as required.

Generic Rifaximin During Pregnancy

Rifaximin (Rifagut tablets) has been classified by the US FDA as Pregnancy Category C. There are no adequate and well controlled studies conducted in pregnant women. Rifaximin should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk to the fetus. Rifaximin was teratogenic in rats at doses of 150 to 300 mg/kg (approximately 2.5 to 5 times the clinical dose for travelers diarrhea [600 mg/day], and approximately 1.3 to 2.6 times the clinical dose for hepatic encephalopathy [1100 mg/day], adjusted for body surface area).
