Acne

Blackheads and pimples - solid or with pus, appearing on face and less commonly on chest, back and shoulders mostly starting at pubertal /adolescent age are indicative of acne.

Prevalence & SymptomsIt is a very common condition affecting almost all young adults, starting between

the age of 12-16 years – slightly earlier in young girls. Severity of affection greatly

varies in the population. Almost two thirds of the females have premenstrual

aggravation. However, severe form of acne is more common in males.

Increased response to hormones whose secretion starts at puberty increasing

sebum production Accumulation of dead skin and excessive bacteria in the oil pores Blockage of oil pores due to oily cosmetics Familial tendency in some cases

TreatmentA dermatologist should be consulted when symptoms occur. Eruptions may continue for long and hence the treatment may be prolonged. While specific treatment suggested by the physician should be followed, the following should be avoided:

Mental Stress Facial Massage Greasy cosmetics

Keep you face clean with deep soapy cleansers as they help to remove the skin (keratin plugs) in addition to reducing the bacteria

Avoid makeup as far as possible Do not unnecessarily touch your face with unclean hands especially do not

prick the pimples you may have Eat fresh fruits and vegetables which boost your immunity Exercise daily Chill!
