Acne Vulgaris Grading System – An effective way of assessing acne affected skin ACNE VULGARIS Acne vulgaris is a common skin disease that has a variety of effects on a person such as itchiness, discomfort, psychological distress, social problems and low self-esteem. It currently affects about 85% of the adolescent population. Assessing the severity of the skin disease by grading will help clinicians to start proper treatment. In current clinical practice, acne vulgaris grading is done by identifying and counting the type of lesions (comedones, papules, pustules, nodules and cysts). This process is done manually by clinicians that may result in inter-rater and intra-rater variability, and the process is also tedious and time consuming. The present study has developed an acne grading system based on the objective assessment of different acne lesions using image processing techniques, which increases time efficiency and accuracy. Novelty and salient features of acne vulgaris grading system are as follows. Automated system for analysing acne grade – it has been developed in collaboration with the Department of a reputable Hospital Applicable for all existing acne grading – Identifies type of acne lesion and provides its count, which is required in existing acne grading methods High clinical acceptability – Provides high sensitivity and specificity (>90%), which is required for clinical applications Treatment efficacy – Consistent accuracy, precise monitoring results and improves treatment efficacy www.platcomventures.com WHAT’S NEXT? THE INNOVATION

An innovative new method of using image-processing techniques to provide a grading system in assessing different acne lesions is now available. With acne being the common problem for skin, the ability to assess its severity by grading helps clinicians to start a proper treatment. This automated system for analysing acne grades will replace the current tedious method done manually. It has a great potential as there is no similar system today.

COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGES

• No comparable system – Currently, there is no automated acne grading system avai lable at cl inics

• Market size – Every major hospital has a dermatology department. As such, this system has high commercial potent ial
