E-CLUB OF SOUTHERN
AFRICA D9400
July 2015
PDGs Shirley Downie and Mark Doyle seen with
newly inducted Rtn Ida van den Berg together with
PE Annemarie Mostert and AG Bellinda Alport
Another Rotary
year has passed!
President Kanthan Pillay enjoyed 16
months of success and now the reigns
are handed over to Annemarie Mostert.
Our club managed to qualify for the Rotary International
Citation with Distinction since inception in March 2014.
Well done to all the club members involved in achieving
these accolades. May we continue to achieve excellent
results going forward.

Rotary International President Ravi
Ravindran has chosen the following theme logo
for his year in office.
This is exactly what Rotarians strive to
achieve….and the gift does not always have
to be money!
We wish Annemarie Mostert all the best as she
becomes the club’s president on 1 July 2015.

Dear Leon Pitalio
SAVF SILWERDAE KHYA LAMI Service Center and SAVF SILWERDAE Ons Tuiste Old Age Home would like to thank you on behalf of all the Elderly for the kind generosity of Rotary E Club of Southern Africa for the donation the food parcels that Guardian Angels collected on our behalf on Saturday 20 June 2015.
This has come at such a crucial time during Wintertime when our Pensioners from the Service Center are so hungry as their daily meal had to be stopped due to delayed Subsidies from the Dept. of Social Development. The last Subsidy paid was in January this year so cash flow has been stretched to the limit. Wow, it is wonderful when people like the Rotary reach out to the elderly and the Residents of Old Age Homes to bring relief from hunger.
All the beneficiaries would like to extend their sincere thanks to ROTARY E CLUB OF SOUTHERN AFRICA for showing compassion and bringing dignity to each individual person. We look forward to a visit from you to see the work we carry out in our facilities and to keep this amazing friendship over the years going from strength to strength.
Kind Regards
Gail Fish

Repair work
needed at this
neglected home
for the aged.
Rtn Leon has adopted this
Old Age Home as some of
the repairs have not been
attended to for 25 years or
more!
This is a mammoth task
indeed but with
perseverance and a lot of
‘asking around’ these
repairs will be managed
under Leon’s guidance.

Foundation giving nears record high
Immediate Past Rotary Foundation Trustee Chair John Kenny
updated attendees on the progress of the Foundation. One of
his goals as chair was to increase giving. The Annual Fund
reached almost $117 million in 2013-14. This year, if
contributions continue at the normal June rate, the fund will top
that figure, making it the highest ever, he said.
The Foundation’s Endowment Fund
has reached a milestone of $1 billion,
where spendable earnings will
provide nearly $13 million of direct
financial support next year, more
than
double
the
amount five years ago.
More than 400 district grants and
over 600 global grants have been
awarded in 2014-15, said Kenny.
“The Trustees are conscious of
obtaining the views of Rotarians
and are seeking their advice
on the new program so that they
can be considered when a review
is made in the
2015-16 Rotary year.”
Kenny praised the expansion of the Rotary Peace Centers program. There have been 312 endorsed applications this year from 85 countries, the highest number since the program began in 2002. Of the 100 fellows selected, more than half are from low-income countries.
Nigeria and the whole
continent of Africa is
on the cusp of being
polio free.
Between 2013 and 2014, the
reported cases of polio
dropped from 53 to just six in
Nigeria. Even more
encouraging, is that the last
case of polio in Nigeria was
reported in July
of last year and
the last case in
all of Africa was
reported in Somalia in August.
“With a year of no polio
cases in Nigeria tantalizingly
close, and no cases in
Somalia since August, the
tireless work of so many
people across the continent is
paying off,” said Jafari, director
of the Global Polio Eradication
Initiative for the World Health
Organization.
