UNVEILING THE ROTARY WHEEL

A Rotary wheel has been unveiled on Monday 29th June 2009 together with the Rotary Club of Mahebourg at Plaine Magnien. Club members were invited to attend the event. The ceremony was followed by a cocktail at Shandrani Hotel. Without the help of members of The Rotary Club of Port Louis, namely, IPP Stephane Henry, Rtn Francois Zouioueche and Rtn Mike Burman, the Rotary Wheel would not have been at its place. Situated next to the airport, the Rotary wheel shows the presence of Rotarians in Mauritius to all people travelling to Mauritius.

THE BRAINS TRUST

The Royal College of Port Louis wins in style

Our first major event of the year, though it was a project started in 2008/2009 for which the finals took place in Rotary Year 2009.One of the best-supported extra-curricular events in the school calendar is the annual Brains Trust competition, which has been organised by the Rotary Club of Port Louis for the last 32 years. The competition is aimed at Secondary

schools, to encourage public speaking at Sixth Form level. It also aims to develop presentation skills, teamwork and reasoning. Since 2001, the Mauritius College of the Air has been closely involved and is now a full partner in the organisation and sponsoring of the event. This has enormous advantages as the recordings MCA makes are a great encouragement to participants, enhance the learning experience (the recordings



become learning tools), and, by being broadcast on MBC, enable the public at large to see what high standards of debate and English-usage the younger generation is capable of. This year’s competition was more successful than ever, with 70% more schools applying to take part than last year. After the eliminations, 32 schools took part in the main rounds, all recorded by the MCA. The Grand Final was held on Tuesday 9th July, with a panel of judges including Rtn Om Varma (Associate Professor at the MIE), Mr Ravin Lama from Le Matinal and HR Consultant, Mrs Mary Ann Hughes. The view was that the standards of debate and language were very high, but the public will have a chance to judge for themselves when the series is broadcast. Watch in particular for this year’s winners from the Royal College Port Louis (in their special anniversary year), and the runners-up from Queen Elizabeth College!

MARCEL LAGESSE AWARD In the memory of our great Rotarian, PDG Marcel Lagesse, the Club had organised a Photo competition. There were fifty four entries which we received and there are six winners. The first prize has gone to Rosiane ANTHONY who wins Rs 25,000 from the Rotary Club of Port Louis, a Marcel Lagesse Trophy from Miroverre Ltd and a NIKON digital camera . The photographs will be displayed at Allied Motors, Reduit. The prize giving ceremony will take place on the first day of the exhibition together with a Press Conference.

WEEKLY MEETINGS But we have had some good speakers, including Shakuntala Hawoldar on Human Rights and Kris Caunhye from TopFM, as well as internal talks from PP Dan on the Peace & Unity project, PP Pierre on Cardinal Jean Margeot amd Rtn Pratik with his job talk.



We also had the visit of a few visiting Rotarians from abroad as well as PP Anand Kinoo from the Rotary Club of Mahebourg. Mr Luc Chung, a Mauritian entrepreneur settled in the UK has been a major donor to the Club for the Project “Outing for the disabled” for the last four years and was awarded a PHF by the club for Year 2008/2009. He visited our Club in August with his family and PP Bernard remitted him the PHF Award since he could not be present at the time of the Induction Dinner.

RECOGNITION OF A NON ROTARIAN It has been a practice at the Club to recognise individuals who are non-Rotarians for their work and commitment towards the Community. This year, Constable Pooloogadoo has been awarded a Recognition Trophy on Wednesday 26th August by The Rotary Club of Port Louis for his bravery. Due to his action, the Police Department has been able to arrest the gangsters who created havoc in the Community. The gang also known as “Les dents L’Or” has been dismantled with more than twenty five arrests. Superintendent Tulsi was also present for the event. Constable Vijay Vishnu Pooloogadoo

Miss Shabneez Soobye was inducted as President of the Rotaract Club of Port Louis on 1st August. The Induction Banquet was held at the Chutney Restaurant in the heart of the city, with Rotaractors present from various clubs from throughout the island.

President Ujjval was guest of honour. Thanks to the other Rotarians who attended, including Rtn Uday, who is our Rotaract officer for the year.

President Shabneez was awarded the best attendance award while PP Deeraj received the Best Rotaractor Award for his accomplishments during the past year.
