GOALChange
“Communication is at the heart of change.” (Panos London, 2010)Panos London & Peter Reason
-can video be a platform to engage the community?-can video be participatory?
Is video the best method for communicating your message?
TYPES OF FILMSome StylesDocumentary styleInterviewPresent as a tv clipShort film (ex. stop motion or story-based)Transformative storytelling

REPRESENTATIONImages and Ideologies (Sturken, M. & Cartwright, L., 2009)

Commissioned by Showtime (US TV channel)
REPRESENTATION CONT.Stuart Hall (2006)
Double meaning: “Re-presentation”-to re-present something, viewing media, you are already looking through
someone else’s interpretation of the subject/people/event-representation is to have your media/words/self stand in for the subject itself-As we discussed in the techniques of shots and angles, this is a way of
framing the subject. We must do it consciously. Whether you are aware of it or not, you are designing someone else’s experience of the subject.
Edward Said“Orientalism”Understand the community, both as the audience and the subject matter.Be aware of the portrayal of “others” in media.Said suggests that cases of orientalism are often highly motivatedCommunication for change film example:World Vision
This brings me back to the participatory theories of Peter Reason.

If we have time, discuss possible use of virtual reality.Could it increase empathy? Is it exploiting the use of that media and human sensitivity?
