- Inception in the 1970s under the aegis of UNESCO and its program UNISIST.

- First version of ISO 3297 – ISSN publishedin 1975.

- A new organisation set up in 1974 to manage the new standard.

The 2007 RevisionThe 2007 Revision

- ISO Process.- The creation of the ISSN-L or Linking ISSN.- Identification extended to digital serials and

ongoing integrating resources.

- Ballots arranged by TC46/SC9 Secretariat @NISO in 2016 and 2017.

- WG5 has been set up by SC9 to manage the 2017 revision and produce the sixth version of ISO 3297.

- WG5 experts come from various sectors.- Scope of standard is unchanged.- Timeline is 36 months.- Convenor is Gaëlle Béquet.

- Key challenges:- Granularity of ISSN assignment,- Better definition of digital serials and continuing

resources,- Revision of the metadata included in ISSN

requests,- Use of ISSN in the linked data environment,- New agreement between ISO Central Secretariat

and the ISSN International Centre as RegistrationAuthority for ISSN.

- Next steps:- WG5 to answer comments from member bodies

on the 5th version,- Systematic review to be officially launched,- WG5 meetings to be scheduled by convenor to fit

in well with the timetable set by ISO for standarddevelopment.
