9 Problems Food Can Fix
By Steve Shenk and myfarminabox.com
Food is Our Greatest Dependency
Food is the greatest insurance of independence, liberty, and personal
freedom you can obtain.
So why don’t more people have a supply of food storage?
In case you still aren’t convinced,
here are 9 essential purposes for which your food supply is an absolute necessity.
9 Essential Purposes for an Emergency Food Supply1. Food Contamination
Severe food contamination has caused significant quantities of food to be recalled in recent years. The advantage you have with a dehydrated supply of food storage is that the dangerous little critters (bacteria and such) can’t live in the low-moisture environment of dehydrated foods.A SHORT-TERM food storage supply is needed here to get you through the danger time.
9 Essential Purposes for an Emergency Food Supply2. Financial Problems
Financial problems come from either a decrease in income or an increase in expenses. With employment layoffs and hours being cut back, incomes for many of us have decreased considerably at the same time that we’ve had increases in our cost-of-living expenses. The big three expenses have been traditionally home, food, and car (in that order). Now we are seeing huge numbers of families where their food is the largest cost they have each month. A medium to long-term/ongoing supply is needed here.
9 Essential Purposes for an Emergency Food Supply3. Illness
Illness can be financially devastating and when it strikes, if your food is already taken care of, you can focus totally on getting well rather than survival. The quantity of food required in your emergency supply obviously varies depending on the nature of the illness. A good rule of thumb is at least a one-month supply for each member of the family, but it may be necessary to go to a long-term strategy.

lockdown/martial lawUnder these circumstances, you are usually required to stay in your home for the duration of the problem. A minimum of a one-month supply for each adult in the home is the guideline, but based on experience in other countries, a three-month supply would be wise.
9 Essential Purposes for an Emergency Food Supply 5. A Disease Epidemic
I treat epidemic separately because there’s a stipulation in the Patriot Act that if you are unable to provide for yourself (Food and water etc.) for a guesstimated 30-day quarantine, it will be necessary to move to a “gathering center.” The quantity of food stored for the situation is obviously one-month supply, but you may want to seriously consider at least two months for each member of the family since, to date, no one has actually experienced this scenario.
9 Essential Purposes for an Emergency Food Supply 6. Food shortages & extreme high food pricesThese are the two primary reasons for a long-term food storage
program. The best time to buy is as soon as possible because the costs go up noticeably over time. With several years of severe drought, food shortages are occurring that have never been experienced before. How much food? I would suggest that you study carefully the conditions we are facing and decide for yourself. Most folks who are aware of the serious nature of the food shortages are thinking in terms of a year or more.
9 Essential Purposes for an Emergency Food Supply 7. Natural Disasters
Storms, earthquakes, mudslides, & floods are what people normally think of when they consider “emergency” preparedness. Oddly enough, these are relatively easy to prepare for and, though they are devastating for those who experience them they usually hit a relatively small portion of our population at a time. FEMA (the Federal Emergency Management Agency) has recommended a minimum of a three-day food and water supply per person along with an emergency supply and tool kit. However, experience has shown that a one-month supply of food per person is highly recommended.
9 Essential Purposes for an Emergency Food Supply 8. Your food will keep your
gunsI don’t want to get into the gun issue at this point. However, every country that has chosen to disarm its population has used food, or the lack of it, in a “food for guns” program to do so. Simply, “you never have to stand in a breadline, to trade your guns or any of your other freedoms, if you have your own bread.” In my opinion, the most probable need for your gun is to protect you and your food from the fool that thinks his gun is an excuse not to responsibly prepare for himself and hopes to take your stuff.
9 Essential Purposes for an Emergency Food Supply 9. Food is your best
possible savings accountEvery dollar put into a food supply immediately has twice its value in groceries. Money not spent on food can help everywhere else in your budget. With the terrible inflation on food, which will get worse as time goes by, the value of your food savings account will increase faster than any other possible investment.
