The main problem happens when you are unable to sync the files between your computer and the OneDrive. Typically this is due to a fault with the desktop sync app. You can do a few simple checks before getting into the more detailed troubleshooting.

File Size: Make sure that the size of the file that you are working with does not exceed the limit that has been set for the OneDrive. This is typically 10GB. You may get a message to the following effect; “This file is too big to upload”. Alternatively the message may advise you to “reduce the size of this file to upload”.

Verification of upgrades: You need to ensure that you verify that you have the latest version of the Windows program that you are using. Visit the manufacturer’s website and toggle on the updates tab. This will do a check on your computer once you give it the right permissions. After the update you should allow OneDrive to check for any changes. If you are using the OneDrive app, make sure you swipe it up from the bottom. Alternatively you can right click on it then tap or click the “sync” button.

Running the troubleshooter: You should run the OneDrive troubleshooter in order to check that all the settings have been upgraded. It can also provide potential solutions to the problem.

For example there could be missing files. You can find them within the OneDrive itself using the menus and prompts. Sometimes the problem is solved by the OneDrive itself in which case you are not required to do anything. Typically you will see the following message: "We’re checking all your files to make sure they are up to date on this PC. This might take a while if you have a lot of files."

Restarting a paused sync: Start by opening the OneDrive app. You can do this by swiping it up from the right edge of your screen. Tap the settings tab. If you are working with a mouse then you can execute the same move by pointing to the lower right corner of the screen. You can then move the mouse pointer up thus clicking on the settings tab. Toggle into the options and then on the “sync files” option. If you have a metered internet connection then it is advisable to fix the sync settings accordingly.

Procedure for metered internet connections: Swipe from the right edge of the screen and then tap the settings. You can then change the PC settings accordingly. In case you are handling a mouse, you can move your cursor to the lower right corner of the screen and click on the settings button. Click on the button to “change PC settings”. Click on the one drive and toggle to the “metered connections”. Turn on the options to upload and download files over metered connections. You also need to turn on the backup settings.

The final thing to consider is whether your path is too long. Typically you should not exceed 255 characters. If you have exceeded them then you need to reconfigure your file pathway so that it is within the limits.
