Page 2: Shameless representations

The eyes are wide, this connotes that he is shocked. This is backed up by the fact that he initially smiles before realising their is a unknown man at the door.

Due to his change in facial expression from happy to concern, this signifies that he is jealous. This conforms to the northern stereotype that they are confrontational as even a police officer seems to change his attitude as soon as he sees another man with a woman that he knows personally. This creates the representation that Northern police officers are corrupt, putting personal matters above their job which changes their attitude.

Due to the eye level shot, the audience is pulled into the scene and the narrative, with them wondering what is going to happen. This is called FISKE with the

audience being stitched into the narrative.

The use of the hat being above the eye level shot connotes

that he has authority withy the audience feeling as if they are

“below”. Also the shadow created by the hat partially hides his face which creates an

evil vibe about him. This conforms to the northern stereotype

that the police are the enemy represented in

this show.

Page 3: Shameless representations

A POV shot is used as the officer looks from at his loosely put on clothes. This connotes that he

has obviously put them on in a rush, coupled

with his red face, exhaustion and wide

open eyes. The officer could easily guess that they have just had sex.

The POV shot also ads to the FISK which

was introduced earlier. This is

because the audience is looking directly

from the officers eyes which makes them

feel like a character in the show itself.

The fact that the officer is looking at the loosely dressed

guy connotes that he is being nosey. This

could conform to the representation of policemen being

nosey people who always watch others.

Page 4: Shameless representations

“Fiona in?”

The fact that the officer asks for the woman by name,

suggests that he knows her personally. This connotes that they

have met before and that her family is

regularly in trouble with the police. Couple

this with his earlier jealousy suggests that he has been attracted to Fiona for some time due to their meet ups. This suggests that he will be more hostile

towards the guy as he is the loosely dressed and a new face, which

also is why his facial expression changed at seeing this new guy. He sees him as an

enemy who got with his love interests.

The fact that he is addressing

the guy informally and using Fiona’s name suggest

that he is trying to subtly attack

the guy by showi ng that he knows her

aswell, suggesting that there is in fact more than just

him who is interested in

her.

Page 5: Shameless representations

“Er, Yeah”

His shocked reaction connotes that he is

surprised, wondering what sort of family he

has gotten in with. This could be that his southern rich lifestyle,

evidenced by his BMW and suit, is not used to the Northern families involved in crime. This further

shows that the family conforms to the stereotype that Northerners are

always involved with the police and crime.

His shocked reaction could have also been

caused by the fact tah5t the officer knows who

Fiona is, suggesting that maybe this policeman

has slept with her before as a previous ex, this

conforms to the stereotype that

Northern women are cheap and easy, sleeping with loads of men. This

goes against his rich values and southern ideology that women

should not act this way.

This is a point of view shot from the policeman.

Mise en scene You can clearly see in this shot that he looks nervous and on edge. By the redness of his cheeks, nose and by his unbrushed hair you can tell that he has been active.

SoundsThe sound in this the scene is the heavy breathing which is diegetic sound and the dialogue.

The point is an aid to help him answer the policeman’s question as he is out of breath.

Page 7: Shameless representations

Mise en scene He is wearing his hat when talking this is to show his authority because policeman usually take off their hats when talking as it is polite. I would argue that this plays to the northern stereotype of them being rude and arrogant.

Shot This is a close up of the policeman. This has been used to try and make him look powerful however a low angle may have worked better here. I would argue that this is not a point of view as he seems to be looking off to the side of the camera.

Sound The conversation on the policeman’s half is very assertive and confident this signifies that he has been here before but also this conforms to the northern stereotype of them being confrontational.

Page 8: Shameless representations

Sound Diegetic sound or him running up the stairs.

Mise en scene The stair case looks old and plain which conforms to the northern stereotype that they are low class.

Camera Point of view shot of him running up the stairs.

Page 9: Shameless representations

Sound You can hear him breathing heavily after running up the stairs, I would argue that this follows the northern stereotype of them being unhealthy. However he is not a northerner from his accent you can tell he is from the south which goes against the southern stereotype of being healthy.

Camera Close up of his face to emphasise how nervous and worried he is.

Page 10: Shameless representations

Mise en scene – The plain cheap lookingClothing signifies that he is working class.Meeting the stereotype of northerners.

This here signifies that he is most likely standingIn front of the bathroom as it is pictured with fish on and looks Like a shower curtain. It looks a little bit childish as well which could connoteThat there are children in the house.

The slightly red cheeks and Slanted looking eyes connotesThat he has just rushed up fromSomewhere or that he feels stressed.

Mise en SceneThe necklace and earrings Signify that she has eitherJust got back from somewhereNice or that she is about to leave.

This is a wide shot to show the character standing in a hallway. In thisShot there is a mixture of lighting. The shadowing to the left of the screenSignifies that there is a source of light coming from the right end.

The slanted eyes Connotes that she is Looking directly atSomething or someone. It cold also signify a lack of confidence as she is looking downwards.
