AudienceShort Films
• What is an audience? An individual or collective group of people who consume any media text/form
• Why are audiences important?Without audiences there would be no media as media organisations produce media texts to make profit (i.e. no audience = no media and therefore no profit)
Mass Audience• A large group of
people (e.g. women/children) who consume mainstream media texts
Niche Audience• A smaller, select
group of people with a very unique interest
Fragmented Audience• The division of
audiences into smaller groups due to a variety of media outlets
Short Film Audience• The audience for short films is niche as is specific to individuals with a unique
interest into short films. As well as this, audiences could be fragmented, as it is common for short films to be consumed on different platforms/media outlets (e.g. YouTube)
• Although the type of audience is established, it is also commonly ‘found for you’. For example, as short films are driven on the narrative, the genre is only really established afterwards. If short films are then registered into a short film festival, they would be categorised by that genre the audience for that particular genre would also be your target audience.
