Unit Abstract

Stop Motion animation involves developing creative ideas for character setting and storyline which will engage the chosen audience. Animation has become increasingly important media form and examples can be seen in many different formats eg advertising, feature films, mobile phone content, the internet and television. In this unit you will be creating a channel Ident for CWC. Stop motion will be combined with designing idents for television. The aim of this unit is to develop an understanding of and skills in the design and production of onscreen graphic representation and the appropriate technologies of image manipulation and production.

Project/Assignment Brief:Expressions of interest are requested to produce a 30 – 60 second stop motion animation, for the CWC TV channels. The idents are to be broadcast on the TV screens around college. The idents need to reflect the style, branding and attitude of CWC. In addition to the longer 30 – 60 second idents. The idents must have orginal content. The content will be subject to the usual contractual obligations and not infringe copyright.

You must complete the following Task(s) and meet the requirements of the Learning Outcomes and Assessment Criteria indicated below.

TASK 1 (Unit 32: LO1 Understand the design and purpose of television idents P1, M1, D1)

1. Intro to channel idents: Write a blog post which identifies and explains three commonalities of channel idents. (Blog label 32.1)

2. Extend your blog post to comprehensively explain design the purposes of channel idents, use at least two idents to illustrate your points. (Blog label 32.1)

TASK 2 (LO2 Understand the opportunities and limitations of onscreen graphic representation P2,M2, D2)

1. Analyse two channel idents. Produce a presentation which comprehensively explain the strengths and weakness of channel idents and give examples to back up your thoughts. (Blog label 32.2)

TASK 3 (Unit 33: LO1: Understand the techniques and styles used in stop motion animation, P1, M1, D1).

1. Produce a fully illustrated presentation (5 – 10 minutes long), that critically discusses the development of techniques, history and styles used in stop motion animation. Give plenty of examples and express your ideas fluently using the correct subject terminology. Please include a bibliography of resources used at the end of the presentation. Please hand in a copy of the presentation to support your assessment. The presentations will be recorded for moderation purposes. (Blog label 33.1)

2. OR Produce a series of blog entries that critically discusses the development of techniques, history and styles used in stop motion animation. Upload any examples of stop motion animation that you have created or you think are relevant reference material. Be reflective and draw upon your own experiences of the techniques you have used. Blog posts should cover the following: persistence of vision, zoetropes, cut out animation object animation, cell animation, pixilation animation, claymation animation, Aardman Animations and applications of animations. (Blog label 33.1)

TASK 4 (Unit 33: LO2: Be able to plan a stop motion animation with soundtrack, P2, M2, D2. Unit 32: 3 Be able to originate and plan television idents to a brief P3, M3, D3).

You will be put into pairs for the remainder of Tasks. But you must produce work individually for each task.

1. Produce mind maps of at least 3 ideas which might answer the brief you have been given. Photograph this and upload it to your blog. (Blog label 33.2, 32.3)

2. Record a 60 second ‘elevator pitch,’ using either Video or Audio. Embed this to your blog. (Blog label 33.2, 32.3)

3. If appropriate: Produce a series of character sketches, which show how the main characters look from each side. (Blog label 33.2, 32.3)

4. Produce a storyboard for the animation (the storyboard must also show evidence that you have considered movement, frames per second, soundtrack, sound effect and script if appropriate). (Blog label 33.2, 32.3)

TASK 5 Unit 33: LO3: Be able to produce a stop motion animation using traditional or digital methods, P3, M3, D3, Unit: 32 LO: 4 Be able to produce a television ident to a brief, P4, M4, D4.

1. Produce a short animation, which answers the creative brief that you have been given to near professional standard.

2. Upload your finish Channel Ident and E-Sting to Youtube.com or Vimeo.com and embed to your blog. (Blog Label 33.3, 32.4)

TASK 6 Unit 33: LO4: Understand how to evaluate audience response P4, M4, D4.

1. Give feedback to 5 of your peers on the idents they have created. Write this feedback on the comments box of their blogs.

2. Ensure that you have feedback from at least five people. 3. Complete a ‘Self Evaluation: Review of Work,’ sheet. 4. Review your audience responses and your ‘Self Evaluation: Review of Work,’ and

write a 500 word blog post, which critically evaluates the ident, production process and audience responses.

5. Or Review your audience responses and your ‘Self Evaluation: Review of Work,’ and produce a video evaluation which critically evaluates both the ident, production processes and audience responses. (Blog label 33.4)
