By Charlotte Worley

ANDREW GOODWIN’S THEORY
1. There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals.
The lyrics are represented with images.
2. Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics.
3. The demands of the record label mean that there
will be a lot of focus on the artist.
4. There is frequently reference to the notion of
looking.
5. There are often intertexual reference.
RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LYRICS AND VISUALS
“There’s a stranger in my bed” “Pictures of last night ended up online”
“This a hickey or a bruise” “Danced on tabletops”
What we can see from the above images is the songs meaning is representing by images (amplifying) this is very common in mainstream videos like this.
T H E D E M A N D S O F T H E R E C O R D L A B E L M E A N T H A T T H E R E W I L L B E A L O T O F F O C U S O N T H E A R T I S T .
•Because of the demands on record labels there need to be a lot of close up shots on the artist.
•Katy Perry is in almost every shot throughout the video, she in a sense is seen as a brand, she is self promoting.
•Throughout the video we see a lot of close ups with some mid shots and long shots of Katy Perry. But whatever the shot, everything is revolving around her and the focus is on what she is doing or what she is looking at.
THERE IS FREQUENTLY REFERENCE TO THE NOTION OF
LOOKING.
•Because this video is meant to be funny, there are a lot of humorous stereotyping which the camera particularly focuses on and draws our attention to it. What is quite obvious is that there is this clear distinction between popular and unpopular teenagers, which is portrayed in a comedic style, which our attention focuses on.
T H E R E A R E O F T E N I N T E R T E X U A L R E F E R E N C E S
•There are no obvious references, but the video is purposely meant to look like a movie, the introduction and the end of the video have movie like features e.g. Credits.
•The film has a stereotypical American teenage movie feel with a typical movie storyline.
