Target Audience

+Mass or Niche

My intention is for the film to be targeted towards a broad, regular mass audience. This is mainly due to the fact that the horror genre is a widely renowned genre, and would subsequently attract a larger audience scale. In order to achieve this however, the film would need to include specific codes and conventions that the audience would typically expect from a horror film. If specific scenes are either too explicit or perhaps unexpected (scenes of this notion are needed in order to create tension) this may draw back from the idea of attracting a great amount of people.

One example of a horror film related to a mass audience is Silence of the Lambs (1991, Anthony Hopkins, Jodie Foster)

+Social Status

There is no particular form of Social Status that I intend for the production to be aimed towards. Yet I need to take into consideration who typically watches films of the same genre and who actually has time to watch the film. Therefore, the film would need to be generalized e.g. including both male and female characters (this is so the film is not stereotypical) and to include a non-complicated, direct plot which appeals to all forms of society.

+Gender

Stereotypically speaking, horror films are typically associated with the male gender. This is in my opinion due to the aspects of violence and death, as well as the scare factor revolved atmosphere.

In order to gain a larger audience scale, the film would need to be keep the sense of violence, but also associating with the opposite gender. A collection of both male and female actors would be required for this to occur.

+Age

The specific age target that I intend to target the production towards is over 15’s. Because parents are likely to not appreciate films of the same genre being targeted towards young children, it is vital that a audience that is mature and old enough to watch the films is created. Based on this particular age range, the film will be of a serious, dangerous nature, a convention of horror movies in general.

+Location

I intend to locate the production, in specific areas which the chosen target audience can relate to. This would result in a sense of familiarity being added to the film production. For example, the film is set primarily within an office building, a typical expectation within suburban culture.

The location is important, as it establishes the scene (sometimes through the use of an establishing shot) as well as giving an overall theme to the film.
