https://twitter.com/cg_okelly/status/656893752179597313 #libraryinstruction I felt the tweet connected to this hashtag was relevant to my research topic because mobile devices do go beyond books; however, using them to teach library instruction is the idea behind libraries being more than just books.

https://twitter.com/MISDEdTech/status/702925426344140800#mobiledevicesThe above linked tweet was relevant to my topic because of the connection to using technology in relation to instruction. In fact, this hashtag is probably the most helpful for my research topic. https://twitter.com/ipeds_nces/status/672777412376047617#academiclibrariesThis hashtag proved helpful for my research topic by focusing on the underlying idea of the exact location of the library instruction at academic libraries instead of just any other library – public, private, corporate, etc.

Student Sample Assignment – Hashtags

Hashtag Research#pinkboots - https://twitter.com/search?q=%23pinkboots&src=typd&lang=enPink boots is one of the biggest women brewing organizations with the goal of empowering and education women in the brewing community. This hashtag was relevant to my research topic because the Pink boots society is one of the more popular brewing organizations for women and it also has phenomenal resources.

#loveofbeer https://twitter.com/search?q=%23loveofbeer&src=typd&lang=enThe Love of Beer is actually a movie about women in the brewing community and my tweet is actually a quote from the movie. This quote really means a lot to the women in craft beer movement as a whole. This hashtag relates to my research because as people watch the movie, they tweet their own feelings/reflections that I have been able to observe to get other opinions for my research.

#barleysangles https://twitter.com/search?q=women%20craft%20beer&src=typd&lang=en This is another women’s brewing organization that is not as popular as the pink boots society but is up and coming and I see great things happening. This hashtag relates to my research because yet again, it is a women’s brewing organization.

Student Sample Assignment – Hashtags

https://twitter.com/NWPCyberCrime/status/712663816492949505#cybercrime I felt the tweet above that included this hashtag related to my research topic because it represents the possibility of being a victim of fraud while losing their savings or pensions from hackers which is a big issue.

https://twitter.com/FrankMosley/status/709191358473445376#identitytheftI thought that this tweet was important to because it addresses not only identity theft, but identity theft dealing with children as the victim thru an attached article. The article talks about preventing this by monitoring your child’s use of social networking.

https://twitter.com/andersonlaw07/status/711983581007110144#cyberstalkingThis tweet was definitely relevant to my topic and probably the most helpful for my topic out of the three I chose. It lets you know about cyber stalking which is a main crime that takes place through social media and the tweet has a link to strong article providing information on cyber stalking.

Alfonzo, P. (2014). Using Twitter hashtags for information literacy instruction. Computers in Libraries, 34(7), 19-22.

Objective: Show how hashtags about the same subject but with different lettering can result in a different (and limited) set of results

• Example: #napomo, #natpomo, #natpoetrymonth, #nationalpoetrymonth• All of the hashtags above are about National Poetry Month but they all lead to

a different set of results!• You could then introduce how subject headings work and discuss that through

the use of a “controlled vocabulary” subject headings are required to be worded in a specific way so the researcher will have a more comprehensive list of results.• Exercise: Have students come up with their own controlled vocabulary for

hashtags. You could also have them explain why they used each hashtag (ex: shorter lettering makes it more conducive for Twitter use)
