Introduction

Craigslist.com is a huge classified site. Started as a San Francisco community

electronic newsletter. It is almost free to post ads to Craigslist, and it is

also free to browse and respond to ads. The users act like watchdogs by flagging ads.

More than 450 cities have a craigslist community site.

The concept of craigslist is a place to communicate and to help one another.

The community member largely moderate the sites.

The commercialism is eliminated as much as possible.

Craigslist Financials

Craigslist was incorporated as a for-profit organization in 1999.

The Craigslist make a profit by the fees for some postings. For example, the job posting fee in New York City is $25.

The Craigslist doesn't release its financial results to the public, but estimations range is in the millions of dollars -- $7 million for 2003 and more than $20 million in 2005.

Craig Newmark and Jim Buckmaster make an effort for keeping the Craigslist a service-based company, that focused on online communities. So they rejected offers to sell the Craigslist for a huge profit.

Craigslist Controversy

The Craigslist community is challenging to eliminate scam artists from the site. So, the site has a section announcing countermeasure against scams.

Police also scrutinizes the site for searching ads soliciting illegal goods or services, such as the prostitution.
