1—Self-Disclosure

Concept Defined: Personal information about the self that is shared voluntarily; others would have trouble finding out this information if you hadn’t told them

West and Turner, p. 255.

Self-Disclosure

Concept Explained:

We all have information about ourselves that others do not know and have no way of finding out. If we choose to share this information with others, that is self-disclosure. It is not self-disclosure if they somehow find out without our telling them, such as someone else giving us the information.

The more confidential the information is, the fewer people we usually tell and the more we must trust the people to whom we reveal it.

Self-Disclosure

Concept Applied:

In this scene, Sam has found out one of Carla’s secrets. To make her feel less embarrassed, he discloses one of his own greatest secrets. This is an example of self-disclosure because he intentionally reveals the information about himself, and there is no way Carla would know about it if he didn’t tell her.

Self-Disclosure

» so i blew my engine in my car today. that was fun...

Concept Applied: This comment was posted on Facebook by a friend who lives in another state. This is self-disclosure because he has chosen to reveal this information, and I would have no way of knowing this if he had not posted it.

2--Me

7Chapter 9

YOU ME

CONTEXT SUBJECT

The four-part model pictures conflict as a circle divided into four sections of conflict

Concept Defined:Me refers to one of the participants in a conflict.

When people disqualify the me in conflict they are being passive and ignoring their own needs. This is called placating.

West and Turner, p. 313-314

Me

Concept Explained:

Each participant in a relationship or in a conflict is important. Sometimes people think they should always give in to the YOU, the other person. However, consistently giving in ignores the ME, and can be damaging to our emotional health and development. On the other hand, we cannot over-emphasize the ME or we will be guilty of pouncing.

MeWe talk about your work how your boss is a jerk We talk about your church and your head when it hurts We talk about the troubles you've been having with your brother About your daddy and your mother and your crazy ex-loverWe talk about your friends and the places that you've been We talk about your skin and the dimples on your chin The polish on your toes and the run in your hose And God knows we're gonna talk about your clothes You know talking about you makes me smile But every once in awhile

I wanna talk about me Wanna talk about IWanna talk about number oneOh my me my What I think, what I like, what I know, what I want, what I seeI like talking about you you you you, usually, but occasionally I wanna talk about meeeeee (me,me,me,me-background singers)I wanna talk about me (me,me-background singers)

Sing365.com,

In this song, the singer is refusing to placate. He is defending the ME in the relationship.

ME

Enough about me…

Let’s talk about you.

What do you think of me?

Concept Applied:

In this cartoon, the woman in red is disregarding the YOU in the relationship. This is called pouncing.

This is not exactly a conflict situation, but it is an example of overemphasizing the ME and disregarding the YOU. This could quickly become a conflict.
