they used.• The positive and negatives implications of representation.• Why star appeal is very important to movies

• WILF• Apply a range of different representation to the images we are

going to view, such as gender, age ethnicity.• Identify using examples of how representation can be used and

depending on the audience how this could be positive and negative.

• Using a range of stars why they are important to the success of film, considering the gross of the film at the box office.

Representation• This will focus on any of the points from the list below:

• AGE• GENDER• RACE• FINANCIAL STATUS• JOB• CULTURE / NATIONALITY

• Representation is used because you can not explore everything about a within a film so certain areas are expanded and focused on when exploring character to make them obvious to the audience.

Age• Age can be represented in a variety of ways both in a positive

and negative way consider the setting and message of the film and why age is shown in that manner.

• Focusing on youth how and why are children shown in different ways in these clips.

• Questions• Are these positive or negative representations of youth?• Why are thy different consider the genre of the film and the

reality it is creating?

Age• Old age can be viewed in different ways as well:

• From the list of words select the right words and explain why they explain the character in the film clips

Screening• You are going to see two extracts that are focused on the

representation of women.

• How are the women being represented in the film are they?

• How do you know consider the use of costume make –up etc

• It is funny and a representation of youth.

• Could the scene also be a negative representation of ethnicity as well as age. Consider the actors and their activities in the scene.

• Different audiences may perceive the scene differently:• Who is this scene aimed at?• Does this then make the representation negative?

Key points• These are the key questions when considering representation:

• Who is being represented and who is the target audience?• What are they doing? • Why are they in the film? Whats there purpose?• Where are they? Do they belong there or not?

• Audience and who the film is intended for will play a major impact on the film.

Star Appeal• Stars will often have a certain image of who they are:

• Will Smith plays strong, independent, quick witted likeable characters in all of his films, lots of charisma.

• Stars are important because they have fans, fans who lie one film will often go to see another film with them in.

• When producers make a film the stars are bankable assets, the producer will assume having them in will make the film successful.

• Will Smith is the tenth most bankable star in the world his films collectively have grossed $2.5 billion dollars

Target Audience• This can be identified using three main categories.

• Gender• Age • Socio-economic grouping.

Socio-economic grouping• This is a category that is based on your profession:

• A - Higher managerial administrative + professional.

administrative + professional.• C2 - Skilled Manual. • D - Semi skilled and unskilled manual.• E - Casual laborers, state pensioner, the

unemployed.
