DEPLETION OF FOSSIL FUELSFossil fuels include both coal and petroleum. These

substances were formed beneath the earth’s crust over a period lasting millions of years. The consumption of these fuels has been increasing at an alarming fast rate even though their supply is strictly limited and there is no chance of their being recycled like some metals. The situation is most critical in respect of reserves of petroleum and natural gas. There is an urgent need for conservation of coal and petroleum along with development of alternative energy resources.

If countries like India and China too decide to have pattern of fuel consumption similar to that as prevalent in developed countries, there would be an energy crunch very soon. The consumption of fossil fuels has also been adding to air pollution. Use of fossil fuels needs to be restrained for this one additional reason. When fossil fuels are depleted agricultural production will revert to the pre-industrial level, and there will be insufficient bulk transportation for distribution of its products.
