Labor and Delivery

Labor is the process of expelling the fetus from the uterus and through the vagina.

The labor process consists of 3 stages:

Dilation stage – 1st stageExpulsion stage – 2nd stage Placental stage – 3rd stage

Dilation StageThe uterine contracts strongly to

expel the fetus. The fetus presses on the cervix and

causes it to dilate or expand. At the end of this stage the cervix

is dilated to 10 centimeters. It is the longest stage. It is divided into two phases – early labor and active labor.

Expulsion Stage

The baby enters the birth canal.In this stage you get the urge to

push.In this stage the baby is born.

Placental Stage

The uterus continues to contract.

The uterus expels the placenta through the vagina.

The placenta is usually delivered 5 – 10 minutes after the baby is

born.

Gynecologist

A physician that specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions of the female reproductive system.

The word gynecology comes from the Greek word “gynaika”- means woman.

Most gynecologist are also obstetricians – physicians who specialize in treatment ofwomen during pregnancy and childbirth.

Uterus Hollow, pear shaped organ that contains

a thick muscular wall, a mucous membrane and rich supply of blood.

Lies between the bladder and the rectum.

The uterus has three sections:Fundus – upper portion, between where fallopian tubes

connect to the uterus.Corpus – the central portion.Cervix – the lower portion, which opens into the

vagina.

Uterus

Endometrium – the inner layer of the uterus, contains rich blood supply, provides protection for the developing baby.

Myometrium – contractions of the thick muscular walls of the uterus, assist in baby’s entering the birth canal during delivery.
