Labor and Delivery
Labor is the process of expelling the fetus from the uterus and through the vagina.
The labor process consists of 3 stages:
Dilation stage – 1st stageExpulsion stage – 2nd stage Placental stage – 3rd stage
Dilation StageThe uterine contracts strongly to
expel the fetus. The fetus presses on the cervix and
causes it to dilate or expand. At the end of this stage the cervix
is dilated to 10 centimeters. It is the longest stage. It is divided into two phases – early labor and active labor.
Expulsion Stage
The baby enters the birth canal. In this stage you get the urge to
push.In this stage the baby is born.
Placental Stage
The uterus continues to contract.
The uterus expels the placenta through the vagina.
The placenta is usually delivered 5 – 10 minutes after the baby is
born.
