Concept and Emergence


Physical Experiment

- Needed a subject that is made up of layers

- Needed monitor the relationship between the layers

- Decided to use half an onion and boil it in varying

amounts of water at different heats

-Key Findings

- Outer layers began to discolour and become

transparent

-Subject was seen to open up around a point (not

middle)

- Picked up the idea of transparency and carried out the experiment again to then take

apart the layers and analyse.

Concept

- At this stage I had my concept of layers

and this new idea of transparency

- Using the layers and transparency

could mean that the building could be

quite lucid and not have a definite form

that would be “concrete”PIC OF NEW CONCEPT


Concept

- Therefore I had my concept and a rough idea of

how I wanted the building to use transparency.

- But how was I to generate a form? If I was to have a

subject manipulated by forces such as wind or other

elements on site, what would this form be? A cube? A

rectangle? Would the emergent form be simple a

deformation of one of these basic forms?


Concept and Emergence

- I went back to my initial thoughts on how I could use emergence to generate a form and

decided to try and model forces on the site such as the wind and human traffic etc


Software Experiments

- Modelled particle flows in the

dominant wind directions on

site at the approximate speeds.

Yellow – Summer wind directions

Red – Winter wind directions

0range – both summer and winter

directions



-I froze the scene at the point where they

intersected and picked approximately 20

points to track

- I imported these points (to scale) into

Revit and using massing began to bridge

these points in a way that would form a

shell

-This would allow me to generate a

form that was not a deformation of a

set form such as a cube, but a form that

was generated by random by the

program.

- At this stage I had a massing but

wanted it to respond to the traffic on site

(pedestrians, bikes etc)

- Decided to model directional force of

traffic on site using particle systems

- 2 main directions (from city and

Newfarm – either end of the site)

- Realised I need to open the massing up and remove faces

- Used second experiment to see where they needed to be removed




- Ran second experiment again – successful after opening up mass




-Could only use the larger

section of the mass to model as

my footprint due to size

restraints

- To stay true to the concept I

wanted to keep this outer shell

as the outer layer and feature

the building mass inside

-Applied some relevant levels of

transparency to both sections
