2. TOPICSAbout AuthorSummary/Analysis Of PoemQuestions 3. About The AuthorThe British poet Elizabeth Jennings haspublished more than 20 books of poetry sincethe 1950s. She writes short, meditative lyricsthat are known for their simplicity, control, and range of feeling. These qualities havelinked Jennings to a group of poets, usuallyreferred to as The Movement, who werewriting in England during the 1940s and1950s. The members of this group, poets likeKingsley Amis, Thom Gunn, Philip Larkin, and John Wain, never consciously formed amovement, but their poetry reveals a sharedlove for simplicity and an acceptance ofregular meter and rhyme. 4. FATHER TO SONI do not understand this childThough we have lived together nowIn the same house for years. I knowNothing of him, so try to buildUp a relationship from howHe was when small. Yet have I killedThe seed I spent or sown it whereThe land is his and none of mine?We speak like strangers, there's no signOf understanding in the air. This child is built to my designYet what he loves I cannot share.Silence surrounds us. I would haveHim prodigal, returning toHis father's house, the home he knew,Rather than see him make and moveHis world. I would forgive him too,Shaping from sorrow a new love.Father and son, we both must liveOn the same globe and the same land.He speaks: I cannot understandMyself, why anger grows from grief. We each put out an empty hand,Longing for something to forgive. 5. Analysis Of PoemThe theme of the poem is the generation gapwhich occurs when the communicationlink between two generations breaks due toa mutual lack of understanding, toleranceand acceptance. This poem is thefather's inability to come to terms with theyoung adult who has replaced the father's'little boy'. 6.
