PLANNING MY MUSIC MAGAZINE

By Matt Cairns

WHAT WILL THE STYLE AND TONE OF YOU MUSIC MAG BE?

My music magazine will be at a style that is attractive to teenagers and young adults who will be engaged to the magazine. This style will be unstructured to attract young adults/teenagers to buy my magazine. The tone will be relaxed as young adults/teenagers will want to read a magazine that isn’t serious.

HOW WILL IT FIT ALONGSIDE EXISTING PUBLICATIONS?

It will fit alongside existing publications because it will contain details to the cover that a professional music magazine has. Also, it will interest the reader as much as a professional magazine would because I will use techniques that a professional magazine has used when making my music magazine.

WHO IS IN YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE/MARKET? MAKE A PROFILE OF YOUR POTENTIAL

READER.

My target audience is based around teenagers and young adults. My potential reader would be a teenager/young adult who is interest in pop music. This means they would be interested in reading informal language in an article and would be interested in a non structured cover. They would potentially wear casual clothing (jeans and a t shirt) and would maybe wear trainers and a cap.

HOW WILL YOU APPEAL TO YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE?

I will appeal to my target audience by making the magazine interesting to them and using professional techniques to draw the reader in and engage them into reading the magazine by creating a stylistic and intriguing front cover. My magazine will appeal to my target audience as they will be looking for a ‘relaxed’ style of text as it won’t be structured into a formal format but however will be unstructured to give a ‘lazy’ look to make my target audience want to read it.

WHICH MAGAZINES HAVE THE MOST RELEVANCE TO YOUR OWN? ARE THERE ANY ASPECTS OF THEIR STYLE THAT YOU COULD BORROW OR USE AS INSPIRATION?

A few magazines that have the most relevance to my own are ‘Q’, ‘NME’ and ‘VIBE’ as these music magazines appeal to the same target audience as mine and use the styles and tones in their magazine that I plan to use. Also, they publish about the same kind of genres of music that I want to publish in mine. There are a number of aspects of their styles that I could use in my magazine. Like ‘Q’, ‘NME’ and ‘VIBE’ I plan to use capitals in the masthead of my magazine and similar fonts as their mastheads. Also, I will use their text sizes as inspiration for me as the size of their main story headline is large and spreads across the whole cover which is what I aim to do with my music magazine. Also, on ‘Q’, ‘NME’ and ‘VIBE’ magazine they make their main photo (usually of an artist) on their front cover, they make it big and bold to stand out more and position it in the centre of the page which is what I plan to do with my main photo of my music magazine.
