•Pipelines are used for transporting crude oil,petroleum products and natural gass from oil and natural gas fields to refineries,fertilizer factories and big thermal power plants.In the past,they were used used to transport water.•Solids can be transported when converted into slurry.•Initial cost of laying pipelines is high but subsequent running costs are minimal.

If all the natural gas pipelines in the U.S.  were connected to each other they would stretch to and from the moon almost three times.

There are three important networks of pipeline transports in India.•From oil field in upper Assam to Kanpur(Uttar Pradesh).It has branches from Barauni to Haldia, Rajbadh to Muarigram and Guwahati to Siliguri.•From Salaya in Gujarat to Jalandhar in Punjab.It has branches to connect Koyali(Gujarat),Chakshu and other places.•Gas pipeline from Hazira in Gujarat connects Jagdishpur in Uttar Pradesh.It has branches to Kota in Rajasthan,Shahajanpur,Babrala and other places in Uttar Pradesh.
