The following slide presentation is designed to provided you with a bit of information about the history and origin of the Schmieding Home Caregiver Training Program and important information you will need to be ready for your first day of class. We are glad you are choosing to attend the Schmieding Program and we are committed to providing you with a quality education in home care.

2The Schmieding Story begins with Lawrence Schmieding who needed caregivers to work in his home with his older brother. After his experience and struggle to find well qualified home caregivers he recognized the need for training and generously provided funding to the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences to build the Schmieding Center in Northwest Arkansas. It was at this center where the Schmieding curriculum was designed and piloted.

Donald W. Reynolds Foundation Recognized the need for more home caregivers throughout Arkansas.

Funded the replication of the Schmieding program at seven locations around the state using the infrastructure of the UAMS Arkansas Aging Initiative Program.

In 2008 members of the Donald W. Reynolds foundation visited the Schmieding Center. They too recognized the growing need for qualified home caregivers and as a result of their visit, they ultimately funded a statewide replication project which established multiple training programs throughout the Arkansas using the infrastructure of the UAMS Arkansas Aging Initiative Program. 3

Schmieding Curriculum

4The Schmieding curriculum used to teach the program was developed at UAMS and is designed to provided step by step quality instruction in home care.

5The curriculum incorporates content required by both Federal and State guidelines for the training of Private Home care providers, Home Health Aides, Personal Care Aides and Certified Nurse Aides. If you successfully complete all three levels you qualify to take the state exam for Certified Nurse Aide.

6Our staff is dedicated to providing you with quality instruction. Our teachers are licensed nurses and well trained with many years experience in nursing and home care. Teachers incorporate a variety of interactive teaching strategies to be certain they are meeting the learning needs of every student. Because of this, we limit class size and provide use a combination of hands on classroom and clinical experiences that we believe provides the best learning experience for our students.

Throughout the program, you can expect our instructors to use a variety of teaching methods. This approach prevents students from getting bored or disengaged. Skills are not just watched on video but discussed, demonstrated and practiced until you are confident. In addition to skills practice in the classroom, you receive a handbook with instructional DVDs so you can read and practice skills at home. 7

Facilities

In addition to quality instruction, the Schmieding staff believes that a positive, supportive environment is important to learning. Thats why at each of our training locations you will find a learning laboratory that simulates a realistic home-like environment, well equipped and conducive to learning. We do this so that when you complete our program you will be confident and comfortable performing care in an individuals home. 8

Equipment and Supplies

9Each of our centers is stocked with a large variety of equipment and supplies. Unlike other programs, you will be exposed to both standard equipment and specialty equipment used for providing care in the home.

Equipment and Supplies

Equipment and supplies used in providing care is compared and contrasted as part of the learning process. We do this so that when you graduate the program you will be knowledgeable about items you might see or be asked to use in the home or community setting. This exposure also helps you be an advocate for people in the home who may benefit from the use of specialty items who dont know they are available. 10

11Our program is uniquely designed and not like other Certified Nurse Aide Programs. In contrast to the traditional two week program, we offer three separate classes. You can choose to take one class or all three. The amount of classes you take will depend on your occupational goals and where you would like to work. For each additional class you take you become more proficient and learn more advanced skills.

In-Home Assistant

The first class you will take is called In-Home Assistant, it is eight days long. In this class you will learn information and skills needed to work in a private home care settings. The people you will learn to care for will need minimal to moderate assistance with daily activities. As part of this class, you will be required to take a written and skills competency evaluation and will receive a certificate of completion at the end of the program. 12

Alzheimers Dementia16 hours Focuses on the care of persons with memory loss and behavioral issues

13If your desire is to work in an adult day care setting, assisted living or assist people in the home who have memory loss you will want to take our class on Alzheimers and Dementia. This class is also required for anyone planning to take the test for Certified Nurse Aide in Arkansas.

14If you want to work in an institutional long term care facility, nursing home, home health or hospice you will need to take our Home Care Assistant Class. This class provides information on caring for people with complex and/or chronic health conditions. The course content in this class builds on information you learn in the In-home Assistant class. Like the IHA class, HCA students must successfully complete both written and clinical skills and must also complete 16 hours of training in an approved clinical facility.

Our graduates work in many different settings. The more training you take the more choices you have about where you can work. Occupational titles and hourly pay can vary greatly depending on where you work and how much training you have. Many employers want their staff to have their Certified Nurse Aide Certificate. It is important for you to know that in order to qualify for this exam you must complete all three classes within one year and test within 12 months of finishing the Home Care Assistant class. 15

Caregiver Directory

16Upon completion of IHA or HCA another option for you is to work independently as a home care provider. You can do this a number of ways. One way is to request your name be added to our caregiver directory. The directory is provided to the community as a free service and is intended to help families and graduates connect.

If you choose to do this you will be required to keep you information current and in order to stay on the directory you will be required to show proof of continuing education each year. Additional details about the directory will be provided to you upon completion of class.

17So, whether you choose to take one class or all three, in the end, we know you will receive the quality instruction you need to be a successful home care provider.

You may have already registered for class. If you havent, you will need to fill out an enrollment form either on-line or in person. You will also need to pay a non-refundable $50 deposit.

A portion of your deposit is used to pay for your background check, it holds your place in class and applies towards the balance of your tuition. Once you have done this you need to provide information and permission to the representative at the training center so they can conduct your background check.

The results of the background check is used by the center to determine eligibility for class. The Schmieding Home Caregiver Training Program follows the criteria for Certified Nurse Aide eligibility as set forth by the Arkansas Office of Long Term Care. 18

Once you have paid your deposit and received notification you are eligible for enrollment you will be asked to read the student guide, sign the attendance form and photo consent. Students planning to take all three classes will need to show proof of a negative tb test conducted within the last year. Information and locations about where to get your tb test are in your student guide. Having your photo taken is optional and is entirely voluntary.

You may pay the balance of your tuition in installments or all at once so long as it is paid in full by the first day of class. Information about payment options are available on the website or from your local training center. 19

Student Guide

The information contained in the student guide provides guidance on local policies and procedures, such as appropriate dress, classroom participation, parking, emergency evacuation, and inclement weather. The information is important, is required reading for enrollment and will vary by location. 20

You will need to prepare for the first day of class by review the teaching schedule and be sure to clear your personal calendar. Let friends and family know you will be taking a class and will be busy for several days, attending and studying for class. Cell phones may not be used during class and must be placed out of site, in purses or pockets on vibrate.

You may need to check on available transportation and arrange for transport to and from classes each day. Students cannot be late for class, it disrupts the learning process and if repeated is grounds for dismissal. Students who do not call and do not show are not eligible to continue in the program and must withdrawal. Readmission will be determined by the Coordinator of Home Caregiver Training and handled on a case by case basis. 21

Students should plan to wear comfortable loose clothing that allows for bending and moving. A jacket or sweater is recommended and shoes should be closed toed, clean, and comfortable. If you do not have appropriate clothing please let the instructor know prior to the first day of class. Hair should be pulled back so as not to interfere with clinical skills. Long or dangling earrings are not permitted because they can present a safety risk to students when conducting skills. Long nails also present a risk to students and others and are not permitted during clinical practice. Students should plan to bring a pencil or pen. Student handbooks are provided but notepads are advisable. 22

Schmieding instructors are committed to providing you with professional instruction and will treat every student with courtesy and respect. In return, they ask that you arrive on time, stick to class schedules and behave in a professional, courteous manner.

You are expected to use good communication skills and there will be no bullying or teasing allowed in the classroom. Misbehavior, aggressive behavior, or sassy talk is grounds for immediate dismissal. Behavior that places self, others or instructors at risk will also not be tolerated. Violence or aggressive behavior either in or off of UAMS property by a student towards another student or staff member will not be tolerated and is grounds for immediate dismissal.

If you have a problem in the classroom discuss it with the instructor in private and after the class. If the problem cannot be resolved by the instructor, the Program Coordinator can be consulted. Conflicts in the classroom will be handled in a timely and professional manner. The Director of Education has the final say so on all disagreements or student complaints. 23

General Classroom RulesLunch and breaksSmoking

Classes typically have two ten minute breaks and a 45 minute lunch. There is generally not time to leave the facility for lunch. A refrigerator and microwave are available at each site but capacity and accessibility will be limited if there are twelve students in class. Therefore, it is best that students bring a bag/box lunch that does not require heating.

All training facilities are operated on UAMS leased property and no-smoking is permitted on the premises.

Student Safety Physical safety

Students safety is a major concern and students are not to conduct skills for which they have not practiced with an instructor. Students are not to lift or transfer a patient in the clinical area without first reading the care plan and consulting with the nurse in charge of the patient at the facility.

If you are injured at the training center or clinical setting you are to notify the teacher immediately. In case of an accident or injury involving a student the instructor will initiate EMS and will contact the students emergency contact as provided in the students academic record.

In case of natural disaster or other emergencies students should follow the instruction of the faculty member in-charge at the teaching or clinical setting. 25

Security Security Personal Belongings

Students will be participating in activities in and out of class. Students are asked not to bring purses and/or valuables to class. UAMS will not be responsible for lost or stolen belongings brought to or left at the training center. 26

The staff at the training center is dedicated to fairness and the belief that each individual deserves to be treated with respect and dignity. Discussing clients in a manner that is not professional, lying or cheating will result in immediate dismissal. 28

Students must have a cumulative score of 80% or above on all assigned work and exams to pass the course. In addition, students must also give a successful return demonstration of required skills specific to each level of training. Certificates will not be issued until the student performs all the skills taught during the course! 29
