Applying for Financial Aid

• Enroll at least half time (6 hours) to receive most types of aid

• Students must make satisfactory academic progress to continue receiving aid (includes student loans, parent loans and work study)

• One third of FAFSA filers are selected for verification by the Department of Education – this means we are going to need additional information from you!– IMPORTANT – It takes 5 – 7 business days for documents to be

scanned into our system

– Financial Aid is a PROCESS – after we receive all of your information it can take 4 – 6 weeks for the entire process to be completed – DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE

Additional documentation may be required… for VERIFICATION of information

– IRS Tax Return Transcript/W-2 Forms (we cannot accept a Tax Return) or an IRS Data Retrieval via FAFSA on the Web

– Untaxed income (Child Support, Pension Distribution, Tax Exempt Interest Income, other)

– Family size (Number in Household)

– Family members attending college (Do not include parents)

– Other... (Child Support Paid, SNAP Benefits, other)

– Never give us your only copy - please keep a copy for your records

– Remember… If we ask for documents, we cannot process your award until we have received them back from you and they have been reviewed

Sign on using your ECU Email Account and Password

Select the Tools tab:

You can review your own information through Banner Self Service

You can also find out your ECU (Banner) ID here.

You can review your estimated cost of attendance, documents you need to provide to our office, etc.

Look for “missing information/verification needed” in Eligibility

You can ACCEPT your award offer here.

Parent and Private Borrowing

• If you have a ‘gap’ between the total aid offered to your student and your cost of attendance you may:

• a) decide to use the Tuition Payment Plan via the Cashier’s Office;

• b) decide to borrow a parent loan, the PLUS;• c) decide that the student will borrow a private loan and

the parent(s) will co-sign that loan;• d) some combination of these three.• Please start these processes at your earliest

convenience. They can take up to 30 business days to be completed.

Things to Remember…

• Read ECU emails regularly• Respond promptly to requests for information• Make sure forms are complete, don’t leave blanks• Banner ID – KNOW IT – Include it on all documents• Buckley – Student must complete to give us permission

for Parent/Guardian/Other to get specific student information (student will do this when he/she registers for classes)

• Students are required to authorize Financial Aid to pay for expenses other than Direct Costs, the release must be completed so aid may cover other charges on the Cashier’s student account (health service fees, etc…)

Job Opportunities!• Search part-time job opportunities (on and off campus) via

our online jobs database at www.ecu.edu/hireapirate.

• Federal Work Study (FWS) is an employment program for students with a demonstrated financial need and who are qualified by the ECU Financial Aid office.

• Students who do not qualify for FWS, should search for Self-Help campus jobs.

– Work on-campus with ECU departments or off-campus with approved community service agencies

– Great pay, Undergraduates earn $8-$10/hour based on experience and Graduate students earn $12.50/hour

Employment Documentation • Students hired to work on-campus or off-campus in a

FWS Community Service position MUST provide proof of identity and employment eligibility on or before their first day of employment. 

• Most commonly used documents to satisfy this

requirement are Social Security Card and Driver License or a Passport.– Must be original documents, photo copies or faxed

documents cannot be accepted!– A complete list of acceptable documents is available at

www.uscis.gov/files/form/I-9.pdf#page=4– Failure to provide these documents in a timely manner may

delay your start date and payroll process.

• Student employees are paid twice a month through direct deposit.
