Hello and welcome to the University of Rochester! Although college life is not new to you, UR is likely quite different from your previous institution. Your Orientation Program will help show you how to navigate the systems here, preparing you for life at your new home. It will cover a wide range of topics and information to ensure a smooth transition to your future success here at Rochester. Communication is the most important aspect of a new transfer student’s time at UR; if you need support, ask for it. Faculty, fellow students, and many of the campus offices are here to assist during and after your transition. The events that take place during Orientation should supply you with all the resources and contact information necessary to properly support yourself here at your new University. A final thought: get out and explore; have fun! The University of Rochester is proud of its friendly student body and open-minded atmosphere. The superstition about the clock tower in Dandelion Square is
that if you walk under it and tread on the dandelions, something
dreadful will happen to you. For example, if you’re a prospective
student, you won’t be admitted; if you’re a current student, you
won’t graduate on time. So walk under the clock tower at your
own risk.
If you accidentally tempt fate, there is a way to avoid catastrophe.
You’ll need an acorn, a statue, and good aim: Throw an acorn at
the statue of George Eastman in the quad and have it land in the
brim of his hat. You are then absolved. But stock up on acorns just
in case you forget to watch where you’re walking.
