New Student Orientation at Indiana UniversityCongratulations on your admission and welcome to Indiana University! Before you experience this new journey—and the challenges, discoveries, and excitement it will bring—you’ll need to orient yourself to life at IU. We’re here to help.

New Student Orientation is required of transfer students for a reason: It’s the best way to get off to a great start. You’ll leave the program with your fall course schedule and much more.

You already know what being a college student feels like. Orientation in Bloomington will help you get started here at IU. This is not a duplication of the freshman orientation experience. Your Transfer New Student Orientation program is planned with the needs of transfer students, like you, in mind.

IUBeginnings This exciting adventure provides a unique setting for making new friends. Take a trip with other transfer students just before Welcome Week and the start of fall classes. Welcome Week Welcome Week is a great IU tradition that includes academic orientation sessions, social and cultural events, IU spirit events, open houses and receptions, and service opportunities.

The student fee is nonrefundable. When you reserve your space for the orientation program, you

are responsible for paying the fee, which will be on your first electronic bill from the Office of the

Bursar even if you decide not to attend IU.

Student FeeThe orientation fee is $125. This fee helps to cover costs associated with orientation including testing, advising, staffing, publications, some meals, your CampusAccess Card (student ID), all program materials and activities, as well as continued programming throughout the year.

The program fee will appear on your first tuition bill from the Office of the Bursar. You may also have parent/guest fees added to this billing, as well as your program housing fees.

Experience On-Campus LivingIf you choose to stay on campus the night before or after your orientation, you’ll be housed in Wright Residence Center with other new students and Orientation Leaders. All rooms are double occupancy, and roommate assignments will be made when you sign in to your room. You do not need to make a reservation prior, and it costs $35 (tax included) per night to stay on campus. More information, including amenities, will be included in your orientation reservation confirmation.

Program DatesThe required one-day New Student Orientation program is the first step in your IU experience. There are five days throughout the summer that programs are offered. The program dates for 2011 are:• Friday, June 24• Friday, July 8• Friday, July 15• Wednesday, July 20• Thursday, July 21

When you make your reservation, you will choose from the dates that are open at that time, and only those dates that have an advisor specific to your intended area of study.

New Student Orientation programs for transfer students begin early in the morning and end with course registration. Your program will end no later than 6:30 p.m. Please plan your travel accordingly. You’ll take any placement exams required by IU, meet with an advisor, and register for classes. You’ll also have a chance to tailor your program by choosing from sessions about services offered to IU students. Lunch is provided.

Required Placement and Credit ExamsExam results will be used for placement purposes and will allow you and your advisor to plan future course work. Scores of these required exams have no impact on your grade point average and will not appear on your official transcript.

Mathematical Skills AssessmentMost transfer students must take the Mathematical Skills Assessment before meeting with an advisor.

Foreign Language Placement ExamAll students who have studied a foreign language for at least one year are required to take this exam at orientation. The foreign language you test for during orientation does not need to be the same foreign language you plan to study at IU. In some cases, foreign language credit may be awarded. The following foreign language exams are offered during the summer program:

• French • Italian • Latin • Spanish• German • Japanese • Russian

Optional Exams

Biology and Calculus ExamsThese exams are offered for potential credit. Both exams are administered on campus; you may choose to take one exam during your program. These and other exams are offered one last time at the beginning of the fall semester, but it’s best to take an exam during New Student Orientation so that your advisor will have access to your scores.

Transfer Placement Exams Online Chemistry Placement ExamStudents who are planning to major in premed, chemistry, biochemistry, biology, and other sciences will need to take the Online Chemistry Placement Exam (OCPE). This exam is administered online and must be taken prior to June 1, 2011, to ensure enrollment for the fall 2011 semester.

The online reservation for New Student Orientation provides information and guidelines regarding eligibility for these exams as well as a link to the chemistry exam (including policies and practice questions).

Testing ModificationsStudents with a diagnosed disability that affects performance on timed exams, who have received testing modifications in high school, need to specifically request modifications when making the orientation reservations. Some accommodations require further information and verification, so please make your reservation soon so that there is time to consider your request. Your accommodations may necessitate that you check in early to your program. Requests must be made and approved 10 business days prior to orientation in order to be honored.

According to university policies and procedures, students requesting disability support services for the academic year must make an additional formal application to the Office of Disability Services for Students. Visit the DSS website at www.indiana.edu/~iubdss for instructions.

For Parents and FamiliesWhile we’re helping your student prepare for IU, we’ll also be helping you prepare as well. The optional program for parents and family members begins at the same time as the student program and runs through mid-afternoon. Lunch is provided, as are sessions to help orient you to student services at IU. You’ll also have the opportunity to visit our Resource Center, staffed with representatives from support offices all over campus. In addition, you can meet one-on-one with housing assignments staff, visit offices such as financial aid, or explore campus while your student finishes with advising and course registration.

Parent FeeThe parent program fee is $20 for the first person and covers all materials. Additional guests will be charged a reduced rate of $10 each, which does not include an additional set of materials. Students may authorize parent fees to be included on their IU orientation bill.

Disability AssistanceStudents or parents who require specific accommodations or who have mobility limitations must call the Office of First Year Experience Programs at (812) 855-4357 within five business days of submitting their reservations. This ensures we have enough time to help participants make the necessary arrangements.

Parent and student sessions are often held in separate locations on campus. Parents and guests needing mobility assistance may want to bring along a family member or friend for additional help, as we do not have staff assistants for this purpose. The program involves short-distance walking several times throughout the day.

Guest HousingWhether you want to stay in Bloomington prior to or the night after New Student Orientation, you can stay in the Willkie Residence Center (an IU on-campus student residence hall), which costs $48.40 plus tax for one to two people. In addition, the Indiana Memorial Union Biddle Hotel and Conference Center is located on campus, and there are many more hotels in Bloomington and the surrounding area. Information about these options will be included in the program confirmation information.
