The screenshot on the left shows a front cover of Q magazine with a close up shot of the main star, however for my magazine I will use a wide angle shot. By changing the

orientation of the image, I will capture both the body language and action of the main star, but I will also capture parts of the location. I like this format because the use of a wide

angle shot captures the whole of the main star or stars. Whereas the close up shot on the Foo Fighters magazine cover only focuses on the bands lead singer, as the other members

are shown in a smaller format.

For my colour scheme I will be using the colours red, white and black. Although these colours are

very basic they all have a powerful effect, the colour white is vibrant and stands out on any

colour background. The colour red is eye catching and grabs the reader’s attention. Finally the colour black is bold, creates shadows, and presents professionalism. I will achieve the colour scheme I desire by using red for the

masthead, which is an element taken from Q’s masthead. I will also use the colour red for the cover lines, and main headline. White for the

background of the magazine, and black for the shadow coming off the masthead.

My strapline will contain different language to the one of Q magazine which is; “Discover Great

Music”. The use of formal language connotes that Q magazine falls into audience category

ABC1. Whereas my strapline will be “Like Music To Your Ears”. The use of informal language

connotes that my magazine is intended to fall into audience category E.

The masthead I have chosen for my magazine will be ‘Riff’ which I have taken from guitar riff, I will position my masthead in the top left-hand corner of my magazine which is a feature that Q magazine also do. I will incorporate all three colours from my colour scheme into my masthead, by having a red gradient text, a white drop shadow inside the text and a thin black drop shadow.

Overall I feel that the font Lemon/Milk is the most suitable for my magazine, although the font is simple its also very effective and would best compliment my masthead. I have chosen to make my masthead lettering bold, however looking at the font ‘Maxxii Serif’ the letters are to thick and close together, this would not leave much space for my drop shadow. Where as ‘Mangosteen’ the letters are to thin but they are still to close together.

Colour Scheme

As I will be creating my magazine using Adobe Photoshop CS5 to maintain the colour scheme I will be using the eye dropper tool to select the appropriate colours.

House ColoursThe house colours I have chosen for my magazine are red, white and black, I think that these three colours are suitable for my magazine as they would appeal equally to my male and female target audience and embrace the indie genre. The colour red is bright and eye catching, the colour white is vibrant and allows brighter colours to stand out, and the colour black is mysterious but its the colour we see mostly associated with rock n roll. Although the colour red is known to be feminine I have chosen to use the colour black as it contrasts with the colour red and allows my magazine to appeal to both genders. For features like the masthead, cover lines and the main headline I will be using the colour red. For the interview text I will be using the colour black, and white will be used as the background colour.

Front Cover

• Red • Masthead, Cover lines and Main headline; red is a bright

and powerful colour, eye-catching to the reader. Red represents passion and love.

• White • Background, shape behind the masthead and barcode;

pure and vibrant colour, reveals other features on the page, clean and fresh suggesting that Riff is a new magazine.

• Black • Drop shadow behind the masthead, cover lines and main

headline and text on the barcode; bold colour, stereotypical colour for shadows, contrasts the two brighter colours. Created a 3D effect behind the text.

Double-Page Spread

• Red • Stand first, Drop capital and Pull quotes; bright colour,

eye-catching, brightly coloured stand first will make the reader think do they want to read on. Bold stand first will create a lasting effect.

• White • Background; a fresh colour like white will reveal other

features on the page, white isn’t overpowering.• Black • Text and Drop shadow behind the pull quotes; bold

colour, dark, retro, typical colour for an interview, typical colour for a shadow, black is a easy to read colour. Contrasts with the other colours.

Page 11: LO2 Market Research

Front CoverSimilarities

I will be using a white rounded rectangle behind my masthead as this is replicating the

shape behind my masthead, however the colour is different.

My coverlines will be red with a black drop shadow this colour I will be replicating from Q, however the black drop shadow is a new idea I will include. This will enable them to stand out beside my main image which will be a close up

shot. Differences

The word Riff will contain a red faded gradient effect which is something that Q magazine

don’t use. I will be using the colour white for my background with a faded grey gradient to give my front cover a more professional and retro feel. The darker background will allow other

features like the masthead to stand out. A black stroke effect will appear inside my

masthead text the bold line will give my magazine a retro feel.

FRONT COVER INSPIRATION

Page 12: LO2 Market Research

Unlike the Spandau Ballet interview my pull quote will be positioned in the middle of the left page. This again will be the colour red to compliment my drop capital.

Instead of using a plain white background I will be going for a slight silver gradient, I have chosen to use this effect as I feel this will give my magazine its intended retro-indie

feel, and make it eye catching for the reader.

At the bottom of the page I will be including a red banner, which will hold the page number and a smaller image of the masthead.

Shown in the interview above Q magazine have used a group shot which fills the entire right page, however I will be using two medium close up shots. Each will be bright and

uplifting with a red border round the outside.

Similarities

Differences

My interview text will be black like the Spandau Ballet interview, I have chosen to

use the colour black as it’s the stereotypical colour used for magazine interviews, and

the bold colour allows the reader to identify the text easier.

My drop capital will be at the top of the left page which is the same as Q magazine

Spandau Ballet interview, however my drop capital will be the letter O and instead of T

and will be red instead of black.

Just like the Spandau Ballet interview my text will be set across 3 columns which wrap

around my pull quote positioned in the middle of the left page.

My stand first will be positioned at the top of the left page which is similar to the

Spandau Ballet interview. However my text will be red to match the pull quote and

drop capital.

SURVEY RESULTS Using Survey Monkey I conducted a 10 page survey, to discover the readership needs for my magazine.

Gender:By looking at the results I made the decision that my survey proved most popular with the 12-18 age group. Therefore I must create a magazine

which is more appealing to a teenage audience, I must also take into consideration the content feature. By checking if its age appropriate, but

also attention grabbing and entertaining.

Age Group: By looking at the results I made the decision that the survey proved most popular with the female gender.

Therefore I must include content which appeals to both genders, for example celebrity interviews with

stars from either gender. Also I could include puff promotions which appeal to both genders.

Page 14: LO2 Market Research

Content featured in the Magazine:By looking at the results I made the decision to include regular celebrity

interviews, as this took popularity with 64% of participants. Celebrity interviews are also one of the main conventions of

not just a music magazine but other genre magazines. They are also one of the first

things a reader expects to find in a magazine.

Marketing of the Magazine:By looking at the results I made the

decision that I would need to market my magazine through social media sites

such as; Facebook and Twitter. Using pop up advertisements or impression

advertising. This connotes that social media is the most common way

teenagers communicate with one another, therefore social media will help

to develop the knowledge of my magazine.

Colour SchemeBy looking at the results I came to a

conclusion that the most popular colour scheme proved to be Red, White and Black. Therefore I made the decision that I would need to create a magazine which obtained the Red, White and Black colour scheme.

This colour scheme connotes that I am taking inspiration from Q magazine, as this is

similar to there colour scheme.

Masthead Names By looking at the results I made the decision to

use name Riff for my final masthead. As the donut graph shows that this name was proven to be most popular, as the participants thought

it best suited the indie genre. On the other hand my initial idea was to use the name

Stringz, however Riff proved to be the most popular.

QUESTIONNAIRE RESULTS

Page 21: LO2 Market Research

Price By looking at the results I came to the conclusion that I must advertise my magazine for a price of £2.50 and no more. These results suggested that a

lower price would attract a wider target audience. I also concluded that if a

magazine had less content then charging a higher price would maybe put a reader off or I would need to reconsider the price.

FrequencyBy looking at the results I analysed that over 60% of participants had suggested that they

would prefer my magazine to be released monthly, and a further 40% wanted weekly.

However the results changed when it came to the option fortnightly, therefore I came to the conclusion that, I must release my magazine

monthly to not only attract but retain my target audience.

AUDIENCE APPEAL

Page 25: LO2 Market Research

From looking at my survey and questionnaire research I have been able to define features for my magazine such as, target gender, the spending power of a typical reader and subscription information.

Contents

Age According to Hartley's 7 subjectivities from my research I have gathered that the desired target age group for my magazine is 12-18. I have

chosen this target age group because I want to produce a new music magazine which appeals to teenagers, but also contains elements similar to Q Magazine. 12-18 is a similar target audience to Q magazines because they are seen to advertise for an older male audience,

the cover stars featured throughout different issues may attract a younger audience.Gender

According to Hartley’s 7 subjective from my research I have gathered that the desired reader gender for my magazine is both male and female. Although indie is a genre stereotypically associated with males, the use of either male or female cover stars, which Q magazine

also do, can attract both a male and female audience. Spending Power

From my results I have gathered that the average price readers are willing to pay for my magazine is £2.50. The results show that a higher price does not attract readers, but puts them off as they feel that they are spending to munch each month. Therefore advertising my

magazine at a lower price will keep customers wanting to buy my magazine each month. Subscriptions

I will also offer the readers a fixed subscription price which is £7.99, there will be three types of subscriptions which are;• 6 months the reader receives 1 issue from January-June,

• Yearly the readers receives 12 issues from January to December,• 2 years the reader receives the first 12 issues from January-December. Once the first year is up the next 12 issues come in the post from

January to December. • By keeping a fixed price this will engage readers making them want to purchase the subscriptions, as they wont have any extra costs.

Magazine size: A4 I have chosen to create my magazine in A4 size as this is the most common size for a magazine, and also its practical. If the size was any

bigger it would be difficult to contain, and any smaller would make it difficult for people with vision impairments to read. Magazine Dimensions

11.7x8.3Masthead

My masthead will be positioned at the top left hand side of my magazine, the name I have chosen is Riff. I have also chosen to present my masthead in capital letters, the use of a sans serif font makes the magazine more appealing to a younger audience. The colour of the

masthead will be bright red writing, with black drop shadow. Colour Scheme

For my magazine colour scheme I will be using the colours red, white and black; I have chosen to use these colours as I feel that red symbolises bold and outgoing people, white is vibrant and pure and black is retro and highly associated with rock n roll. These colours are

also taken from my magazine of inspiration which is Q who also include red and white in their colour scheme.

Page 26: LO2 Market Research

Target readership

• Age: between 18-24• Gender: Male• Lifestyle and Education: College, Sixth Form or University. • Employment: Unemployed, working part-time or starting a full time job. • Spending power: Lower budget between £2-£3 potentially higher depending on employment. • Typical everyday interests: listening to music, playing sports, playing a musical instrument. • Socio-Economic Needs: Audience category E and potentially D • Psychographics: Explorers.

• I have created a basic audience profile for a male reader of riff magazine

The target readership for my magazine is a male between the ages of 18-24 potentially older if they are interested in purchasing magazines. Their lifestyle would be active as they would be in full time education, however they may also be in university as the age group is 18-24. They would have a lower spending budget between £2-3 however this could be higher if they are in employment. Their interests would involved; playing sports, socialising with friends, reading books and magazines, playing a music instrument and listening to music. They would fall into audience category E if they are between the ages of 18-21, and potentially D if they are above the age of 21 and employed, they could either be working part-time or full time if they are a graduate. They would also fall into the psychographics category ‘Explorers’. Explorers are typically a younger demographics like my target audience, as they are possibly a student they would seek information which is entertaining and engaging.

FRONT COVER Like Q Magazine my masthead will

be in the top left hand corner of the front cover. I will also be sticking to the red and white colour scheme,

however my unlike Q my text will be red and my shape will be white.

My main headline will be positioned near the bottom of the page, this is a feature which I will be replicating from my front cover of inspiration. However I will be using red with a black drop shadow

instead of plain white.

There will be a Puff Promotion in the top right hand corner, this will include white text on a shiny gold background. This will make the puff promotion an eye catching feature

and draw the readers attention. This is a feature Q Magazine don’t use very often.

My cover lines will be positioned down the left hand side of the front

cover, instead of using both black and red text I have chosen to use

plain red with a black drop shadow. This will give my magazine a ‘Retro’

‘Rock N Roll’ feel.

I have chosen to position my main image to the right and will manipulate it so it fits the width of the front

cover.

At the bottom right-hand side of the front cover readers will notice a barcode containing the date when the magazine

was released, their official web address and convergence such

as; Facebook and Twitter.

My strapline of “Like Music To Your Ears” will be positioned below my

masthead. The font I will be using will be the same as my

interview text, and again I will be sticking to the red

and white colour scheme.

Page 32: LO2 Market Research

DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD Like Q I will be keeping my stand first across the top of the page, this will introduce the reader to who is

being interviewed. The main text will be in the colour red and use the font ‘Roboto’ which is the same as my interview, however the name of the main star will be ‘Lemon Milk’ which is the same as my masthead.

My drop capital will be a red letter O in the same

font as my masthead, positioned at the top of

the left page. This will be significantly larger than my stand first and pull

quote.

You can see my pull quote will be placed across the middle of

the left page, I will be using the font ‘Orator’

which is different to my masthead and stand first. The text will be red with a thin drop

shadow behind. My three text columns will wrap around my

pull quote, the font I will be using is ‘Roboto’. Instead of sticking to my red and white colour

scheme my text will be black. I have chosen this as black is the most common colour for

magazine interviews.

On the right page there will also be three text

columns, to hold the last section of my interview which didn’t fit on the

left page.

At the bottom of the right page I will include a quote from my interview,

just like my pull quote the font again will be ‘Orator’ with a thin black drop

shadow behind.

As for images I will be using two medium

close up shots, of the main star. Each will

contain a red border with a small caption

underneath, describing the image.

DRAFT INTERVIEW

Page 34: LO2 Market Research

The image above show my draft interview with Lana Del Rey, as inspiration I looked to Q magazine interview with Spandau Ballet. Throughout the interview Q focus on bringing out the humorous side of the band, therefore I had drafted questions which were similar to the ones from Q Magazine for example question 2 which asks “Your shows have been named ‘peculiar; and ‘extravagant’ tell us about your most embarrassing performance?”. To be able to answer these questions I had to make sure that Lana Del Rey’s response was language appropriate, and that it was relevant to a previous performance from her career.

On average Bauer Media charge £10,072 for a full page advert, however my magazine will include 3 full page advertisements which would total up a cost of £30,216. However for my magazine I am going to lower the price to £9,500 which is £572 pound less than the total price Bauer Media would expect from a potential 3 full page advertisements. By lowering the price this should attract more advertisers.

Advertising and Promoting Riff magazine!

The main platform I will be using to advertise Riff magazine will be social media such as; Facebook, Twitter and possibly Instagram. As my target

audience is both males and females aged between 18-24, social media has proven to be one of the most popular sources of communication between

adults and teenagers, therefore using a site like Facebook or Twitter will get Riff magazine noticed.

For my magazine I will aim to include 5 full page advertisements, which appeal to either gender, as I have chosen the target gender for my magazine to be both male and female. The dimensions of my full page advertisements are trim 285 X 210, Bleed 291 X 216 and Type 265 X 190.

LEGAL AND ETHICAL ISSUES

Page 46: LO2 Market Research

AdvertisingThe main way I will be advertising Riff magazine will be through social media sites such as; Facebook, Twitter and potentially Instagram later on in the year. I have chosen to advertise through social media as this is one of the most popular ways to advertise today and s also were I would most likely find people in my target readership.

Another way which I will be advertising my magazine is through other Bauer Media magazine such as Q, Kerrang and NME. Advertising through another music magazines means that readers who do not use social media will also be introduced to the magazine.

• There is no specific cost to advertise on Facebook its all done by setting a daily or a life time budget, there are two types of advertising ‘cost per click’ and ‘cost per impression’ the minimum budget which the website accept is £1.

• There is no set budget which you need to secure to advertise with twitter you only pay when another twitter use makes contact with your account examples of this include; retweeting , replying or favouring a tweet.

I have chosen to advertise my magazine using full page advertisements for which Bauer Media charge

£10,072 for 1.

End

I have discovered that registering by magazine for a copyright logo will protect the content which the reader will find inside, from cases of copyright infringement. I have also discovered that by registering the design of my magazine in particular the front cover, will stop other magazine producers from stealing the design of my magazine and passing it off as theirs.

By conducting a series of researches I was able to find out what the target readership for the magazine would be, and what other people thought would make an indie music magazine appealing. Overall the idea of a new indie music magazine proved to be most popular with readers who fell into the 18-24 age group, as my researched showed that Indie proved to be the most popular genre of music with adolescents. I was also able to finalise which masthead would appear on my front cover. Overall ‘Riff’ proved the most popular and best fitted the indie genre. From my research it was also evident that the colour scheme which would appeal most to the target readership was red, white and black.

By creating rough drafts during the magazine production process helped me to experiment with different styles for my magazine such as the layout and the colour scheme. During this process I was able to introduce new ideas suggested by others and change the features which I felt didn’t fit the indie genre. This helped me to improve my drafts until they where able to be finalised for producing my front cover and double-page spread.

In conclusion I have discovered that I must produce an indie music magazine which appeals to my target readership of males and females within the 18-24 age group. The content must be exciting and keep the reader engaged throughout, as well as exploring the indie music genre.
