Sangkuriang

who had but a single daughter. Her name was Dayang Sumbi. She was beautiful

and clever but also pampered and spolited.

One day as she was weaving in her pavilion, she became moody and

distracted, which caused her to keep dropping her shuttle on the floor. Once

when it fell she exclaimed she would marry the one who gave it back to her.

At that very moment her dog Tumang, a demigod possessing magic powers,

came up to her with the shuttle in his mouth. Dayang Sumbi had to marry him.

They lived happily together, and Dayang Sumbi gave birth to a baby boy,

human in appearance but endowed with his father’s magic powers. She named

him Sangkuriang. As the boy grew up, he was always guarded by the faithful

dog Tumang, whom he knew only as a companion and not as his father,

Sangkuriang became handsome and brave.

One day his mother asked him to go hunting with the dog and bring her

venison for a feast. After hunting all day without success, Sangkuriang worried

about facing his mother empty-handed. Desperate, he took an arrow and shot

the dog. He returned home and handed over the meat to his pleased mother.

Soon after the feast, however, Dayang Sumbi questioned her son about the

absence of Tumang. At first he evaded her queries but finally told her what had

happened. She was horrified and struck her son so hard on the temple that he

collapsed. For that, the old king banished his daughter from the court and she

was made to roam around the kingdom. Sangkuriang recovered with a large

scar on his temple, and he too left the court to wander about the world.

Years later, Sangkuriang met a beautiful woman and instantly fell in love

with her. It was his own mother-they did not recognize each other. He pro

posed to her and she agreed to marry him. On the day before the wedding, as

she was caressing her fiancee’s hair, Dayang Sumbi detected the scar on the

temple. Horror struck her, for she was about to marry her own son,

Sangkuriang. Without revealing the whole truth to him, she tried unsuccessfully

to dissuade him. Desperate to avoid the marriage, she set conditions she

thought impossible to meet. Sangkuriang had to make a lake that filled the

whole valpley and build a boat for the couple to sail in, all before dawn.

Sangkuriang started to work. His love gave him extraordinary strength,

and he used his magic powers to summon the spirits to help him. With boulders

and mud they dammed the river in the valley and the water rose and began to

form a lake. In the early morning hours he chopped down a huge tree in the

forest and began hollowing it out to make a boat. When Dayang Sumbi saw

that he was about to accomplish what she has thought impossible, she called

on the gods to bring the sun up early and thwart Sangkuriang.

The cock crowed, the sun rose much earlier than usual, and Sangkuriang

realized he had been deceived. In a fit of fury he caused Dayang Sumbi and

kicked the half-finished boat back into the forest. There it lies upside down

today, forming the mountain Tangkuban Perahu (Upturned Boat). Not far away

Birds belong to a class of warm blooded vertebrate animals with feather

covered bodies. Next to the mammals, birds are the most important group of

land-living vertebrates. All birds have feathers, although in some types,

particularly those that can not fly, the normal structure of the feathers may be

much modified and be downy, woolly, or straw like. The forelimbs of birds are

modified into wings. The bony part of the tail, except in the very earliest fossil

birds, is very short, and the visible tail is composed of feathers only. The teeth

are absent except in some fossil forms. As in mammals-the only other group of

warm blooded animal-the circulation is highly perfected so that there is no

mixing of arterial and venous blood, but the arrangement of veins and arteries

by which this is accomplished, is different in the two groups. Birds have keen

related mistake after leaving the hospital, and guidance from a pharmacist

didn't seem to reduce those errors, in a new study.

Consequences of mistakes - such as forgetting to take certain drugs or

taking the wrong dose-can range from side effects like constipation to more

serious drops in blood pressure. Two percent of errors were life-threatening.

Hospitals involved in the study were already taking steps to prevent

medication mistakes in addition to the extra pharmacist intervention, said Dr.

Sunil Kripalani, the study's lead author from the Vanderbilt University Medical

Center in Nashville, Tennessee.

"We were surprised to see that in spite of these efforts that 50 percent (of

patients) were still having these medication errors," he told Reuters Health.

Although the pharmacist visits didn't help the average patient, he added,

all people and can turn them off their food. People pay to taste good food

Learning English

Learning English through music and songs can be very enjoyable. You can

mix pleasure with learning when you listen to a song and exploit the song as

a means to your English progress. Some underlying reason can be drawn to

support the idea why we use songs in language learning.

Firstly, “the song stuck in my head” Phenomenon (the echoing in our

minds of the last song we heard after leaving a restaurant, shopping malls,

etc) can be both enjoyable and sometimes unnerving. This phenomenon also

seems to reinforce the idea that songs work on our short-and-long term

memory.

Secondly, songs in general also use simple conversational language, with

a lot of repetition, which is just what many learners look for sample text. The

fact that they are effective makes them many times more motivating than

other text. Although usually simple, some songs can be quite complex

syntactically, lexically and poetically, and can be analyzed in the same way as

any other literary sample.

Furthermore, song can be appropriated by listener for their own purpose.

Most pop songs and probably many other types don’t have precise people,

place or time reference.

In addition, songs are relaxing. They provide variety and fun, and

encourage harmony within oneself and within one group. Little wonder they

are important tools in sustaining culture, religion, patriotism and yeas, even

revolution.

ast but not least, there are many learning activities we can do with songs

such as studying grammar, practicing selective listening comprehension,

translating songs, learning vocabulary, spelling and culture.

From the elaboration above, it can be concluded that learning through music

and songs, learning English can be enjoyable and fun.

Integrated Pest Management

There is no best way to deal with pests in agriculture. Pesticides which are

commonly used may cause many problems. I think combining different

management operations is the most effective way to control pests.

Firstly, the chemicals in the pesticides may build up as residues in the

environment and in the soil which absorbs the chemicals. This reduces the

quality of farm product.

Secondly, pests can gradually become resistant to pesticides. This means

that newer and stronger ones have to be developed.

Lastly, some pesticides affect non target plants and animals such as fish and

bees. This affects the ecology and environment as well.

So, understanding of ecology of an area helps a lot in pest control. Pesticides

should be chosen and applied carefully so that they don't affect the ecological

balance and environment.

Therefore, integrated pest management is a safe and more effective option

to fight pest in agriculture and livestock.

13. Which of the following is not directly affected by pesticides used?

a. Plants

b. Ecology

c. Animals.

d. Environment.

e. Human Beings

b. Both paragraphs tell about the disadvantages of using pesticides.

c. Both paragraphs tell about how pesticides affect the quality of farm

products.

d. The statement in paragraph is contrary to the statement in paragraph

four.

e. The second paragraph tells about the effects of using pesticides on

animals mentioned in paragraph four.

15. One of the disadvantages of using chemical pesticides is …

a. killing fish and bees.

b. increasing crops productivity.

c. creating balanced ecosystem.

5. Ki Hajar Dewantara

The development of good character should be the heart and soul of

education, and should dominate the spirit of teaching. This was the

philosophy of the “Father of Education” in Indonesia, Ki Hajar Dewantara.

The reason, he said, was that teaching and character building are like two

sides of a coin and cannot, and should not beseparated.

Education, by definition, means guiding student lives in a strong

foundation of good character, so that they would be civilized humans of

highest moral fibre, thus laying the foundation of a great nation without

distinction of religion, ethnicity, customs, economic and social status.

Ki Hajar Dewantara was born in the royal family of Yogyakarta on 2 May

1889. His given name was Raden Mas Suwardi Suryaningrat which he later

changed to renounce his connections with the royal family. He transformed

himself into an activist, columnist, politician and pioneer of education for

Indonesians. He fought for rights of Indonesians during Dutch and Japanese

colonial eras.

He was born into an aristocratic family that granted him the privilege of

free access to education of his choice. He got his primary education from

ELS (Europeesche Lagere School), then he continued his education at Stovia

(Java Medical School) but due to health reasons he couldn't finish it. He

started writing for newspapers and eventually all his writings were focused

on Indonesian patriotism, thus anti Dutch. He was involved in the early

activities of Budi Utomo and the Indiesche Party, which were both important

in the early development of the pergerakan, the “movement” that grew up

with a nascent Indonesian national political consciousness.

He was exiled between 1913 and 1919 following the publication of two

of his articles: “Als ik eens Nederlander” (If I was a Dutchman) and “Eén

voor allen en allen voor één” (One for all and all for one). He used his time

in exile to learn more about education and obtained a Europeesche

certificate.

Following his return, he focused more on cultural and educational efforts

paving way to develop educational concepts in Indonesia. He believed that

education is very important and the most important means of freeing

Indonesians from clutches of colonization. He played a leading role in

establishing “National Onderwijs Institut Taman Siswa” in 1922. This

institution was established to educate native Indonesians during colonial

times. This institution was based on these principles:

1. Ing Ngarsa Sung Tuladha (the one in front sets example).

2. Ing Madya Mangun Karsa (the one in the middle builds the spirit and

encouragement).

3. Tut Wuri Handayani (the one at the back gives support)

As Ki Hajar believed that character was not merely a theoretical concept,

but a practical and living concept, he embodied his vision in his school,

Taman Siswa. The central goals of Taman Siswa emphasized character

building, including traits such as patriotism and love for the nation, and a

sense of national identity. His vision was that Indonesians would be free

from colonial powers, to fight for independence and have good character.

He continued writing but his writings took a turn from politics to education.

These writings later laid foundation of Indonesian education. Froebel,

Montessori and Tagore influenced his educational principles and in Taman

Siswa he drew some inspiration from Tagore's Shantiniketan.

After independence, he was given the office of Minister of Education and

Culture. For his efforts in pioneering education for the masses, he was

officially declared Father of Indonesian Education and his birthday is

celebrated as National Education Day. His portrait was on 20,000 rupiah

note till 2002. He was officiallyn confirmed as a National Hero of Indonesia

by the 2 President of Indonesia on 28 November 1959.

Ki Hajar Dewantara passed away on 26th April 1952 at the age of 69

years. His wife donated all Ki Hajar's belongings to Dewantara Kirti Griya

Museum, Yogyakarta. He was a great man who spent his whole life serving

his people and country.

meteorologic data from South America and many other regions around the

world. Darwin's own observation on this voyage led to his theory of natural

selection.

Charles Darwin was greatly influenced by the geologist Adam Sedgwick and

naturalist John Henslow in his development of the theory of natural selection,

which was to become the foundation concept supporting the theory of

evolution. Darwin's theory holds that environmental effects lead to varying

degrees of reproductive success in individuals and groups of organisms. Natural

selection tends to promote adaptation in organisms when necessary for

survival. This revolutionary theory was published in 1859 in Darwin's now

famous On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection.

to perform in his david foster and friends PBS show in las vegas alongside

such star studded foster produced talents as michael buble, caline dion,

andrea bocelli, and josh groban. When the “david foster and friends” show

returned to the mandalay bay the following year, charice received no less than

six standinng ovations. In between the two vegas appearances, charice went

on to perform with andrea bocelli (“the prayer”) in tuscany and caline dion at

her medison square garden show in new york city.

During charice’s most recent appearnce on oprah winfrey, her heart

stopping song “note to god” written by multi-grammy winning songwriter

diane werren became an instant top 10 hit on itunes. Charice also had a

Birth Most people agree that some form of family limitation or spacing is

desirable for the good of the family and society. But individuals and groups–

especially religious groups–differ sharply on the methods of birth control that

they consider moral and acceptable.

Couples that practice birth control do so for various reasons. They may

want to limit or space their children or to have no children at all. Young couples

often postpone having children so that both partners can work full-time. Other

couples space their children so they can give each child as much attention as

possible. Some women are advised by their doctors to avoid pregnancy for

health reasons. In many countries with rapidly growing populations, the

government encourages couples to limit the size of their families.

Even though birth control has gained in acceptance, opposition to the

practice is continuous. Some people fear that birth control encourages sexual

relations outside marriage or that government might impose birth control.

Some religious groups oppose birth control on moral grounds.

Some religious groups teach that artificial methods of birth control are

TEXT 2

Some people agree with the rule because it indicates students’ mastery of

the whole material or the competence they have ntanaged to have over the

past three years. The result of the final exam is also significant for students’

future study in the higher level.

In addition, we are far left behind by our neighboring countries that have

implemented a higher graduation gracle standarcl. If the standard is omitted.

then student will get left behind even furlher by those students fiom

neighboring cottntries students.

However, some other people believe that imposing a high standard will not

be etfective. The results of the exams have proven to be unreliable. How can

you asses the students’ competence only in a couple of days. A smart student

for example, may get a low grade just because he is sick during the exam. On

the other hand, an idle student may achieve the standard due to luck. There

should then be an alternative way to the national exam.

Despite working on different points of view, the government’ this matter in

TEXT 3

Some people claim that children do enough work in school already. They

also argue that children have hobbies that they want to do after school, such,

as sports or music. A further point they make is that a lot of homework is

pointless and doesn’t help the child learn at all.

However, there are also strong arguments against this point of view.

Parents and teachers argue that it is important to find out whether children can

work on their own without the support from the teacher.

They say that the evening is a good time for children to sit down and think

about what they have learned in school. Furthermore they claim that the school

day is too short to get anything done that needs doing and it makes sense to

send home tasks like independent reading or further writing tasks that don’t

need teacher’s support.

On balance, I think that some homework is a good idea but that it should

only given at the weekend when children have more time.

1. How do we compare the second and the fourth paragraph?

a. Both paragraphs argue that homework is necessary for students.

b. Unlike the fourth paragraph, the second paragraph argues that

homework is unnecessary.

c. Homework should be given at weekend.

d. Student should not be given homework.

e. tudent must frequently have homework.

TEXT 4

Many people say that examinations should be abolished because they are

not the best measure of student’s capabilities. These people believe that

students can study on their own and do better without the nagging worry and

pressure exerted by examinations.

Yet, there are persuasive reasons to show that examinations should not be

abolished. It is insufficient that teachers assign homework and correct it.

Because this is not done under supervision, they cannot be sure that it is really

the work of the students themselves. Moreover, homework is not a test of

student’s ability. Homework is a method of merely keeping him occupied.

Nowadays, in the hunt for jobs, students need to produce some evidence

of their capabilities. Prospective employers like to see copies of examination

results. This is the only way a student’s qualifications can be judged. This

attitude greatly encourages the use of examinations, since it is considered it

necessary for them to measure their capabilities.

1. Why do some people disagree to abolish the examination?

a. Exam result is the only proof of student’s capabilities.

b. Nobody trusts the students nowadays.

c. It is a regulation in the country.

d. It is a good measurement.

e. It is for the sake of efficiency.

2. What is the main idea of paragraph 2?

a. The examination still keeps going on.

b. The teachers’ roles supervise the students.

c. The homework is important for students.

d. The homework is usefulness for students.

e. The teachers are insufficient in school.

3. From the text above, we infer that….

a. the examination is still used for measuring students’ qualifications.

b. there are a lot of people agreing the examination as the quality

control.

c. the examination is not neccessary to use for measuring the students’

abilities.

d. the examination is used as means of measuring students’ abilities

e. the government obliges educational practitioners conducting the

examination for increasing the quality.

TEXT 5

Many young people have difficulty deciding where they will live when the

time comes to leave home and make their own way in the world. Among the

more common alternatives are sharing a house or flat with other young people,

and finding full board and lodgings in someone else's home.

Renting a house with other young people offers the advantage of a high

degree of freedom and independence. On the down side, renting involves a

variety of responsibilities that may be more than you wish to take on. This

would mean you would be responsible for making large rental payments if one

or more of the people you are sharing with should move out of the house or

flat. It might also mean that you are held financially responsible if they damage

the dwelling.

Finding board and lodgings, on the other hand, has significant advantages.

Generally you have no responsibility for the cleaning or maintenance of the

dwelling or its gardens, other than to take reasonable care of your room.

However, living in board and lodging circumstances has its drawbacks too. You

have less freedom and flexibility in your lifestyle.

In the end, the decision each person makes will depend on their own

personal valuing of independence and of convenience, as well as their feeling

of readiness for taking on the considerable financial and other responsibilities

of house or flat rental.

1. The text mainly discusses about …

a. Sharing a house.

b. Cleaning a house.

c. Deciding where to live.

d. Renting a house.

e. Finding full board.

2. “Finding board and lodgings, on the other hand, has significant

advantages.”

The underlined word means …

a. Gained position.

b. Rooms rented to live.

c. Supply of materials.

d. Work of cutting down trees.

e. Ability to convince.

3. The writer’s purpose of writing the text is …

a. To present two points of view about deciding where to live.

b. To persuade readers to rent a house with other young people.

c. To describe how to decide to find a rented house.

d. To inform readers how to decide where to live.

e. To explain how to find board and lodgings.

Egar,

I am very sorry for this late reply. I have just returned from my hometown.

I was on a holiday, but I did not really enjoy my stay there. Things were not

the same as they used to be.

When I was a child, I used to swim and go fishing with my brother and my

friends in the river near my house. I liked the river because the water was clear

and there were a lot of fish in it.

Now, the river is full of garbage and the water is turbid. The fish are gone

and the area around the river is dirty. There are no children swimming and

fishing in the river because the water is ominous. The chemical waste from the

factories makes it poisonous.
