PAN’S LABYRINTH• Pan’s Labyrinth (2006), is a fantasy drama film directed by Guillermo

del Toro.• It is set in Spain 1944, where a bookish young stepdaughter of an

army officer escapes into a scary but enchanting fantasy world.• The main character in Pan’s Labyrinth is a young girl called Ofelia

who is led on a quest to a fantasy world by an ambiguous trickster. • We took inspiration from Pan’s Labyrinth by casting a young, naive

and impressionable girl to star in our music video. Similarly to Pan’s Labyrinth, we’re exploring the theme of escapism as the young girl stumbles upon a door which leads her

into a fantasy world.

PAN’S LABYRINTH• Within Pan’s Labyrinth, the girl becomes a woman by entering the

fantasy world and discovering the rules of the world are false. She then returns home. Similarly, we have chosen for our music video to turn full circle in order for our female character to end up right back at the door she started with.

• This creates a sense of journey that the audience can follow, and can be seen in many other fantasy films staring female protagonists such as Alice in Wonderland and The Wizard of Oz.

ALICE IN WONDERLAND• Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is an 1865 novel written by

Lewis Carroll. • The story is of a young protagonist named Alice who falls down a

rabbit hole into a fantasy world of odd creatures. • In chapter seven, Alice attends the Mad Hatters' tea party in which

there lies a long table full of various foods. We have used this idea in our music video to represent ‘an acquired taste’ of foods where our female character enters one of the dark rooms.

ALICE IN WONDERLAND• Here the mad hatter’s tea party can be seen in Florence and the Machine’s

music video for Rabbit Heart, depicting a sense of illusion as it does in Alice in Wonderland. We aim to achieve this style in our music video, but with our lead female sitting by herself surrounded by the temptation of various foods.

ALICE IN WONDERLAND• The character of Alice has influenced our female character in many

ways. Alice is described as ‘innocent’, ‘wildly curious’ and ‘imaginative’ by commentators who have read the book. We aim for our female protagonist to show these characteristics in our music video, in reference to the character of Alice.

• Alice’s costume design has influenced our female character’s appearance, with her fairy tale style dress and ribbons in her hair.
