Before Reading

• Create an Illustration. Students will be asked to create what they think Mars will look like. This will get their imagination flowing and thinking about the characteristics of the planet.

During Reading

Think-Aloud • The teacher will model what a

think-aloud is by reading the introduction to the chapter on Mars. Students will read along making notes on the paper. Once the think-aloud is complete, students will partake in a classroom discussion (pg. 299).

Response Journal • Students can stop and write

down notes and key ideas in a journal to help organize their thoughts on the reading.

During Reading

Re-visit before reading questions • Students will re-visit their

questions from the before reading activity. This allows for student comprehension to take place while reading is occurring(pg. 289).

Active reading • Students can utilize the text to

highlight, underline and take notes on what they are reading. Students can use this to identify unknown words, recognize answers to questions or underline what they might need further clarification on.

Compare-contrast map • Students will compare and

contrast Mars from Earth using a graphic organizer

Close Reading Questions • Students will answer questions

based on the text that will gear them to go back and re-read the text

Story Mapping • Students will map out the events

of the text, and organize the main points of the text by using a graphic organizer

Write a Post Card to a friend • This allows the students to re-

visit the text and draw important information from the text and summarize it into a post card.
