Photograph Selection

I chose not to use this photo because its dark and I didn’t like the background.

I chose not to use this picture as I felt my model’s expression didn’t give the connotation of joy I was looking for.

I chose this photo because I love how happy my model looks and I really like the angle as it makes the image look candid and allows us to see the whole guitar as well as the model.

I don’t like this image as the angle looked weird and I don’t like how it cuts off at two edges

I didn’t choose these photographs because the lighting made my model look a bit unwell and they were also too desaturated for the aesthetic I was going for which is bright and exciting. The background was also a bit too busy for my liking.

Although I like my model’s expressions in these photos, I didn’t feel like it added anything to my magazine as she is wearing headphones in my cover image. The lighting is also not very good.

Article

I knew that throughout my magazine I was only using 3/4 fonts so I have chosen one of those 3 or 4 for each componentCalibri-I chose not to use Calibri as it was to be the font for my article and I wanted something which would stand outAR Bonnie- This is my masthead font so I didn’t want to use it elsewhereOrator Std- I didn’t use orator std because I felt it would look too harsh next to CalibriMV Boli- I chose to use MV Boli because its clear yet it looks like handwriting and I wanted Rani’s words to be in a font which looked like handwriting to make clear what the pull quotes were.

I chose to use calibri as it is easy to read and it is a sans serif font so it still looks modern which is what I wanted for my pop magazine.AR Bonnie- This is my masthead font so I didn’t want to use it elsewhereOrator Std-I chose to not use this font as its hard to read when it is very small or in large quantatiesMV Boli- if I had written my article in this font, I think it would have looked very childish so I chose to just use it as an accent to my pull quotes.

Calibri- I didn’t think Calibri was very interesting so it would not entice people to read my magazine if I used it as my headline or subheading.AR Bonnie- This is my masthead font so I didn’t want to use it elsewhereOrator Std- I chose to use Orator Std because it is both eye catching and readable.MV Boli- I felt that MV Boli was too informal to act as my headline and subheading.

I used the spot heal tool to remove any imperfections from my model’s face. This made my photo look a lot more sleek and professional. I then used the burn tool to define her eyebrows, lash line and to darken her hair in order to bring out those features and to contrast the lighter colours in my photograph. This helped to give my photograph impact and to make her more captivating.

Editing and Construction

Next, I used the quick select tool to select my model’s teeth. I then used the bucket tool to whiten them so that her smile stands out and gives a sense of real joy within her about her music. I then used the clone stamp to remove the handle on the wall and the split in the wood panels so that they would not distract from my model and so that my photo looked a little bit more professional.

I used the gradient tool to give it a pink tint to match my other photographs however, I later lowered the opacity to make it seem more like natural light. I then created a new blank layer and used the rectangle marquee to select the right hand side. I used the paint bucket to add a tint so that it created a background for my article.

To write my headline I used Orator STD in size 200 and added a drop shadow to make it stand out on the page I chose to write it in white because its easy to read and it’s less harsh than black alongside my very bright photograph. I also added in my subheading in size 36 but with no shadow to make it eye catching but so that it didn’t overpower the headline. I then moved on to Microsoft Publisher to do the final construction where I inserted my image and my article in columns to make it easy to read. I used calibri (which is very modern looking because it is sans serif) in size 8 as is convention.

I used insert drop cap to visually pull the reader into my article. I customised the colour to reflect my model’s jumper in order to add uniformity to my page. I the went on to insert text boxed for my pull quoted which my main body of text wraps around. I chose to use MV Boli in size 11 to show the subject’s words as it looks like handwriting and therefore creates an association between the model in the photo and the pull quotes. I then used the colour selector tool to get the colour of the guitar and used it for my pull quotes to unite the photo and the text.

I inserted my masthead (AR Bonnie size 22 with drop shadow) and a rectangle banner with a drop shadow in order to brand my page. For my page numbers, I used the shape tool to insert circles and wrote each number in Calibri size 10 so that they could be seen when reader’s are flicking through the pages but so that they don’t overshadow the rest of the page.
