As he is wearing dull colours signifies that he is poorer than the couple on the left and this is also denoted by the holes in his jacket. Although his dark clothing denotes an antagonistic character the fact he is holding white fabric connotes that he has good intentions that the audience is soon to find out.The setting once again signifies that he is of low class as the colour are drab and in the period the drama was set people used colour to show their wealth so the dull stones and drab clothing denotes that the character is of a poor background especially compared to the couple on the left.

The signifiers in the picture on the left is the clothing. As the woman is wearing a long

dress and gloves signifies that she is from a wealthy

family. Not only this but the colour of her costume (cream

and white) connotes purity suggesting she is pure of

heart, however gloves usually connote that the character is

hiding something which contradicts what the rest of her costume denotes. The

male is also wearing clothing that connotes wealth but the colours denote that he could be hiding something as he is wearing a dark coat over a white shirt could symbolise that he has a dark secret hanging over him that the audience will soon find out.

The setting is also a signifier as we can see the couple are

standing on a balcony in a garden, the bright colours

once again symbolises that they are upper class as the garden is well kept almost

representing the characters themselves in the same way.

The denotation of the picture as a whole is to show the differences between the classes but

the connotation (especially between the males) is that they are not that different as they are both hiding something (either good or bad)
