There are 7 characteristics:

• Movement

• Metabolism

• Respiration

• Sensitivity/ responsiveness

• Growth

• Reproduction

• Excretion

• Nutrition

Movement

• An action by an organism or part of an organism causing a change of position or place.

Page 5: Characteristics of Living Things

Respiration

• The chemical reactions that break down nutrient molecules in living cells to release energy.

Page 6: Characteristics of Living Things

Sensitivity

• The ability to detect or sense changes in the environment (stimuli) and to make responses.

Page 7: Characteristics of Living Things

ClickBiology

•A REACTION THAT A LIVING ORGANISM DOES IN RESPONSE TO A STIMULUS.

Page 8: Characteristics of Living Things

•Stimulus–Anything that causes a response to react.

–Example: if you touch a hot object, you will automatically pull your hand back

Growth• A permanent increase in size

and dry mass by an increase in cell number or cell size or both.

Page 10: Characteristics of Living Things

•Is a process by which living organisms get bigger.

•A. cells increase in size

•Each cell becomes larger.

Page 11: Characteristics of Living Things

Reproduction• THE PROCESS THAT MAKE

MORE OF THE SAME KIND OF ORGANISM

Page 12: Characteristics of Living Things

ClickBiology

•A life functions that provides new living things to take place of those old ones that die. It provides continuation of species.

Excretion• The removal from organisms of

toxic materials, the waste products of metabolism (chemical reactions in cells including respiration) and substances in excess of requirements.

Page 14: Characteristics of Living Things

Nutrition• The taking in of

nutrients which are organic substances and mineral ions, containing raw materials or energy for growth and tissue repair, absorbing and assimilating them.
