Characteristics of Living Things
Biology
ClickBiology
You WILL be able to:
• list and define the characteristics of living organisms
ClickBiology
There are 7 characteristics:
• Movement
• Metabolism
• Respiration
• Sensitivity/ responsiveness
• Growth
• Reproduction
• Excretion
• Nutrition
ClickBiology
Movement
• An action by an organism or part of an organism causing a change of position or place.
ClickBiology
Respiration
• The chemical reactions that break down nutrient molecules in living cells to release energy.
ClickBiology
Sensitivity
• The ability to detect or sense changes in the environment (stimuli) and to make responses.
ClickBiology
•A REACTION THAT A LIVING ORGANISM DOES IN RESPONSE TO A STIMULUS.
ClickBiology
•Stimulus–Anything that causes a response to react.
–Example: if you touch a hot object, you will automatically pull your hand back
ClickBiology
Growth• A permanent increase in size
and dry mass by an increase in cell number or cell size or both.
ClickBiology
•Is a process by which living organisms get bigger.
•A. cells increase in size
•Each cell becomes larger.
ClickBiology
Reproduction• THE PROCESS THAT MAKE
MORE OF THE SAME KIND OF ORGANISM
ClickBiology
•A life functions that provides new living things to take place of those old ones that die. It provides continuation of species.
ClickBiology
Excretion• The removal from organisms of
toxic materials, the waste products of metabolism (chemical reactions in cells including respiration) and substances in excess of requirements.
ClickBiology
Nutrition• The taking in of
nutrients which are organic substances and mineral ions, containing raw materials or energy for growth and tissue repair, absorbing and assimilating them.

• Movement
• Respiration
• Sensitivity
