Characteristics of ALL Living Things

All living things:1. Are MADE OF CELLS

2. REPRODUCE

3. Have some sort of GENETIC CODE (Usually DNA)

4. GROW & DEVELOP

Characteristics of ALL Living Things

5. Obtain and Use Materials - ENERGY

6. RESPOND TO STIMULI

7. Maintain a Stable Internal Environment - HOMEOSTASIS

8. EVOLVE – as a group, organisms will change over time

Biology is:

-the study of life

“bio” means life &

“-logy” means study of

1. Living things are made up of cells.

Cells are the basic unit of structure and function.

2. Living things reproduce.

-produce offspring which resemble the parents

Page 7: Characteristics of Living Things. Characteristics of ALL Living Things

Two types of reproduction:

Sexual – two cells from different parents unite to produce the first cell of a new organism.

Asexual – a new organism has a single parent

3. Living things are based on a universal genetic code.

• Molecule called DNA contains the genetic code which determines the inherited traits of every organism on earth.

4. Living things change during their lifetime

-Grow (increase in shape and size)

-Develop (mature)

-Have a life cycle

5. Living things use/need energy.

Energy comes from food, used to maintain body

Metabolism is the combination of chemical reactions through which an organism builds up or breaks down materials as it carries out its life processes.

6. Living things respond to their surroundings

React to

a stimulus.

Reaction is called a response.

7. Living things maintain a stable internal environment

HOMEOSTASIS: internal balance Examples: sweating, panting, shivering, etc.

8. Living things as a group change over time. (Evolve)

Change to better survive in their environment.

ex: changes in temperature, climate, etc

Changes take place over a long period of time.
