BHAKRA NANGAL DAM – aerial view
• The Bhakra Nangal dam is the largest dam in Asia and is located across Sutlej river at the border of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh.
• Length of dam is 518.25 ms and breadth is 304.84 m. It is the biggest multi-purpose project in India.
• Its construction was started in 1948 and it was completed in 1968. This is also known as the highest gravity dam in the world.
• It was dedicated to India by Jawaharlal Nehru in year 1963.
INTRODUCTION
RESERVOIR - BHAKRA NANGAL DAM
The main purpose behind its construction was to provide irrigation to the states of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. The other purpose was to control the flood in monsoon.
It is used to provide hydro electricity to Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, Punjab and Haryana which has encouraged many major industries in these regions whose total turn over is 1500 crore.
The Bhakra Nangal project involves an investment of 235 crore.
The average life estimation of Bhakra Nangal dam is 400 years.
PURPOSE & USES
MASTER PLAN OF CHANDIGARH CITY
Chandigarh, the dream city of India's first Prime Minister, Sh. Jawaharlal Nehru, was planned by the famous French architect Le Corbusier. Picturesquely located at the foothills of Shivaliks, it is known as one of the best experiments in urban planning and modern architecture in the twentieth century in India.
Le Corbusier conceived the master plan of Chandigarh as analogous to human body, with a clearly defined functions such as:

The City Centre comprises of The Inter-State Bus Terminus, The Parade ground and The District Courts.
The lungs comprises of The Leisure Valley, innumerable open spaces and the sector greens.
The brain comprises of the Cultural and educational institutions.
The Network of roads in Chandigarh is considered to be the Circulation system. It consists of 7 different types of roads called the 7Vs in which V8 was added later for the cyclists.
The viscera comprises of the Industrial Center.

DEVELOPMENT PLAN OF CHANDIGARH
The Department of Urban Planning accords technical guidance to Chandigarh Administration for designing and planning of various projects / public buildings and framing of rules and guidelines for governing all types of construction and urban development of the city.
The Department of Urban Planning consists of two wings (Architecture wing and Town Planning Wing). The Architecture Wing deals with the designing of Govt. buildings, standard designs, architectural and frame control etc. whereas the Town Planning Wing prepares scheme for the implementation of Master Plan, Planning of new areas/Sectors, Zoning Plans, besides identifying land use zones.
