    Site Characteristics

    Site and its surroundings

    .

    Existing secondary school

    in close proximity to site.

    Height of G+2, having

    open brick facade.

    The senior secondary

    school is the only structure

    available in the vicinity.

Botanical garden in front of the site approached from the main Chandigarh kurali road.

    Approach Road

The approach road 1 to the site

    is the Chandigarh kurali

highway, it is two way road

    60.94 m wide.

The road is busy 24 hours a day

and lot of noise is coming from

    the approach road.

    Inner approach road 30.48mts

wide along north east side of site.

    Therefore possible entry to the

site can be through two longer lengths

of site, and the design approach can be

    adopted taking this into consideration.

    Shape of the Site:

    Rectangle

    Topography of the Site:

The site is plain there is no

    undulating surfaces.

    The site is depressed 1.75m

    below the main approach road,

therefore there is need of soil

    infilling on site.

Soil is loamy and fertile and has

lot of weeds and shrubs grown

over it, therefore the building structure should be such that it will not be

affected with the unwanted vegetation growth.

    Soil has good percolation capacity.

    Vegetation

Few tree grown on the site

    Weeds and unwanted grass

    grown on the site.

    Existing Structure and Services

There is no existing structure on the site

    1.75m

    Vegetation grown on the site

    Ventilation shaft is

    also existing in-

    between the site that

    point will also have

    to be catered during

    designing.

    Rain water drains

    and sewer system

    has been installed

    along the roads

    approaching the

    site.

    Climatic Conditions

The climate of Sarangpur experiences four seasons

Summer season (mid March to mid June).

Rainy season (late June to mid September).

Autumn season (mid September to mid November).

Winter season (mid November to mid March).

    Wind direction

    Winds flow from north west

to south east in winters and

    reverse in summer

The winds can be placed in

    windward direction to

    achieve cool atmosphere in

    the building .interior.

The built up design can be such that the cool atmosphere can be achieved during summers

and remain warm during winters, considering the wind conditions.

    Rainfall -1030mm/avg

    Temperature

    Winter - Nov-Jan (0deg C 16deg C)

    Summer - April-July (28deg C 43 deg C)

    Latitude - 30.68o

    Longitude - 76.73o

    Sun Path

This shows that the harsh sun is on south west

and south east side of the site, therefore proper

solar passive techniques should be inculcated.

    Seismic zones

The site lies in the seismic zone 4, therefore

    it is prone to earthquake.

The building structure should be in

accordance with the Indian standards and

    guide lines for hazards safety.

    Conclusion

Climate : The site is loacated in the composite climatic zone , therefore , the climate

would be extreme in summer as well as winters. Therefore the solar passive

architectural techniques applicable to composite climate are needed to be followed.

Location : The Sarangpur area is yet to develop , and especially the area is to close

proximity to the site . Therefore the built up will going to put an impression on the

surroundings and would be the basis for the upcoming building around it .

Site orientation: The site is along

the North East and South West

    direction, therefore as the

    building is an institutional

    building therefore preferred

    orientation is aligning the building

    along East- west axis.

    The major openings in the

building should be placed on north

face where as southern face should

be protected from heat gain by

    using shading devices or

    vegetation.
